Antigua spearfishing reports

  • So I finally got a break in my work schedule and MAYBE what seamed like a workable weather day, it has been blowing and rolling for months now without a break it seems... Especially bad as I cant even get out to shore shoot or anything! Gills are dry and frustration was/is building.
So this weekend I got to give it a try for a blue water day with my new Koah blue water beauty(poor girl still has not got wet yet)
    This + that
    = :D

So off we went, did not even make it out of the shallows before we realised it was going to be a tough brutal day... Wind was gusting 20k+ with a constant 18k blowing, waves 2.5 to 3 meters, confused seas and throw in springs on a full moon :(
But! We had birds so rods rigged and lines in water... nada for brutal hours... I got into my suit, on with the weights and got all my gear rigged for a quick overboard if we ran into a fish ball or any debris. When I had had enough I braved the small tuna platform set above the T-Top to see if I could not spot a FAD or two
YES I KNOW I LOOK LIKE A GIANT POSER :@

, no luck, but I did luck into a pair of Frigates feeding. From my perch I could clearly see the flash of a big bull and his female companion :) the greedy buggers charged the lines but before we could hook up a playful small sail ran across our baits slapping them around and caused a massive tangle. Sorted that out and soon had the female hooked up :thumbsup2:

30LB female as the bull would not play nice but some is better than none :D
Soon afterwards while I was up top I saw a giant shape torpedoing towards the boat almost the length of our 23ft boat on the starboard side, so I yelled WHALE! Then I muttered cant be as it was moving way to fast, it passed the boat then turned obscenely fast to cut across our bow and then it hit me what I was seeing was a thousand pound plus Marlin having a look at us!! Wohoooooo what a privilege!!
So no getting wet and several black and blues but a big grin on my face anyway :D

  • Sorry it wasn't the spear trip you hoped for. But it still looks like a nice day with some beautiful fish. And A day where you see a rare bit of Marine life is definitely special. Thanks for sharing.

  • Nice report. Sorry you had bad weather.
I was out at Glovers Reef to try for wahoo from Sunday to yesterday. We had some of that same weather blow through here on Tuesday. I would have been screaming for my mama out there on my skiff so we were forced to stay in side the reef out there and hunt some reef patches. Got some fish but not the big silver ones withe stripes....

And, as my luck is running this year, it's calm and glassy today. :(

Shite man as the Bajans say Hank... Really thought you and the young man who makes us all look bad would have had your stripes by now, still eludes me as well but wind guru had Monday as being a doable day so(cough cough) I feel a sick day coming on for Monday(gasp, cough)
By the way reef fishing in Antigua is the worst of the worst, very jealous of you guys... Add to the mix Ben out on my cousins boat shooting wahoo in my home country of Grenada is driving me nuts!!

  • Next time keep the female on the line and jump in to shoot the male with your gun. That Marlin must have been a sight. A buddy of mine trolls live 40lb ahi to catch granders. I can only imagine what one would look like underwater. :)

We were so busy getting in the lines that might be a problem for the female and hopping the Bull would take the other lines we had out that I did not think about jumping in! After we had her on board I did suggest we try chumming him in for me to shoot but my buddy was not up to bringing in the 6 lines and sitting rolling in 9 foot seas while I got wet(pussy)

  • So been weeks of swells cummulating in big sets today(12 ft) and building everyday till Tuesday next week so no spearing or fishing so we decided if we could not beat um then go surf um..lol... some members of our motley crew had not surfed in over a decade and if we used all our good parts combined we may have had one normal person :D But was fun and so hitting the 20 footers at 5:30 AM tomorrow morning before the wind kicks up, same place as today(Sandy Island) about a mile offshore.

This is pertinent as a couple of us were wearing speardiver vests...lol...

    Till the sunset baby!

  • yeah even here in Trinidad's north coast in bays that are normally calm the water is pretty rough and vis is low . great pics by the way .:thumbsup2:

Be safe ... Happy hunting .

  • Nice George! Today was the first calm day in 3 weeks that weve had when the wind hasn't blown over 20knts. But that north swell is kicking up some nice waves around the souse I hear! Miss diving with you man! I'm trying to talk Alan in to an overnight trip to Reindeer Shoals when the winds calm down later in April. But in the mean time, we will be throwing flashers and chum by the souse hoping for another wahoo to come in on us! Or better yet, a Sailfish!

  • Reindeer shoals is da bomb!! Major shark action around there so get ready to fight for your fish :D...
This Sat the weather here is supposed to give us a break so hopping if I have charters to sneak away for a day in the blue shooting dolphin :thumbsup2: You have to come up sometime and go on a FAD with us Ben

  • Haha I miss summertime in FL and having to fight sharks so maybe it will keep things interesting. I still have yet to see a real shark here in GND. Idk if I told you, but a friend of mine shot at 20lb African Pompano here the other day. It was pretty sweet!! There was another one with it, and he said he almost had time to fight the first one, string it, and shoot the 2nd one! lol

  • We get massive Pompanos in Grenada, the really big ones are up Grenville way but I have shot truly big ones in the caves off of the windward beaches in Westerhal, I could tell ya where those caves are but then I would have to shoot you :laughing3:

Lol this one was shot in 20' of water around the Westerhall area. Wicked current tho. I would love to come to Antigua and shoot fish with you man, but my schedule is piling up the closer I get to becoming a real doctor lol. Maybe during my 3rd term around July-August I will try to make a trip up to see you, or down to Trini if our friend is still down there.

  • So I went out fishing with my buddies on Saturday about 40 miles to the West of Antigua and jumped into the Blue at 3 FAD's.
I would deploy my flashers(by the way my flasher float I made worked awesome!!) way up current of the FAD and drift with my flashers doing multiple dives at my flashers depth of 35 feet or just below at about 40 ft. My flashers got mobbed by old wives( trigger fish) but nothing else showed up so I shot a few trigger fish to add to the pot and practice my aim on my new bluewater gun the KOAH 65... By the way that is the smoothest most accurate gun I have ever shot, I was amazed at how accurate it was at small targets over 15 foot away stringing my spear every time.
