A few more from Belize 2

  • Hey, This is my first thread so I pretty much suck at posting stuff.
Went out with hank and Jorge yesterday. I was pretty lucky. 7 dives, 6 fish. Then the weather turned pretty bad so we headed in.
Jorge hadn't been diving on over a year and a half. He's been in Viet Nam. But he was doing 65 foot dives for a minute 30 seconds. He jogs a lot and is in really good shape.

  • Here's a few more pics. I did about 6 dives and didn't get a fish but we got some shots of the weather. Jorge got a nice video but I don't know how to post it.
We jumped in and within about 30 minutes Jake had 5 fish or so. Then a nasty squall bliew in. Jorge was a bit sick so he got back on the boat. The waves had been coming in from the East, southeast but the squall came from the NE. The boat turned into the wind on anchor but waves were whitecapping and hitting us almost broadside. We got back on the boat and tried to decide whether to hide in the cayes...but I started the engines and tried to keep us pointed into the bigger waves.
Jake got another fish and then the curremt picked up strong so we headed back.
By then the wind shift had kicked up two swells that were crossing as they followed us. The boat would lurch as they peaked right under us and we'd start to surf down the face. Lot of throttle control and concentration.
When we reached the reef, we got in the cut and that squall had built up into a major thunder storm with lightning all around us. Pretty wild. We ran to the north and anchored and waited it out for a couple hours. Then had a pretty rough ride home sliding around on the waves. Those skiffs, with a flat bottom are like surfboards in waves. Shit.
Jorge seems to have bad luck. Last time he was here, my motor broke down 24 miles out. He really dives well.
This is just inside the reef where we anchored to wait it out. Jorge got some video of the lightning bolts all around us.

  • 2nd pic, the old man and the sea? Captain Ahab? The intensity is palpable :) Nice pics. The water does not look inviting. What is the pink reel line and how do you like it?

You gotta post the video on youtube. Then copy the direct link and paste it in the post.

  • a few nice snappers at the end of the day.. we found a nice little rocky point outside the reef pointing north that tapered off and dropped down to about 75 ft.. some dogs were on the bottom hangin out in a little area but was only able to get one of them as the day was already getting late.. i love diving for these fish. deep, and spooky.... we got some small groupers and a couple ceros earlier in the day..

  • nice 30 lb cubera from last week.. went down for a dive to the bottom at about 65ft just to take a look.. about 18 seconds later i see this fish kind of swimming away from me already barely in vis.. i snuck up behind it closer and closer when finaly it slowed down so i layed on the bottom so see what it was gonna do next then it just turned around and came right up to me.... i made sure it was close enough for my shaft to go all the way through since the flopper broke off getting a grouper out of a hole earlier. so Jon, another dive buddy, went down and shot it again in the head just to be sure it wouldnt get off.. the whole dive took 1:52.. nice.......

  • Jake hit the cubera (next to the jack he's gnawing on in the pic) and was telling me,
"where are you going....look down there"....I was trying to swim up current to breath up a bit because there were some more snappers. I got down to the bottom and waited. Two dogs were just out of range and then I see a pretty big cubera coming along. I looked down so he wouldn't see my eyes....but he never came within range. I was guessing 30 lbs. Jake said, "it was fricken huge Dad"....hah.

Hank I just got one of those new mirrored mask thing-ah-me-bobs tinted yellow for vis, havent used it yet but hoping it will work on hiding my eyes from the fish, you ever used one?

A bad day at sea is better than a good day in the boatyard

I bought a mirrored one and only used it once. I think it might be good for wahoo or other blue water fish, near the surface on a sunny day in very clear water.
But here, with vis less than 50 feet...or even up to 80 feet, it's really hard to see fish on the bottom. Too dark. And since we're primarily hunting bottom fish....I gave it to DuQuesnay. He says the sun hurts his eyes now....but he also says he can't see the fish. :D

  • 6 fish in 17 dives.. really good morning but i was getting a little sinus headache by noon and got out of the water.. the fish were at about 70 to 90ft on the bottom and didnt really want to push diving like that with the sinus problem..and i had to do a few extra dives earlier for a few of these dogs to get them out of a hole at 80 plus ft.. its kinda sketchy shooting doggies at that size and depth because they look for the littlest crack or hole in the rocks to go hide and get tangled in, then you gotta breath up for 5 minutes to go down again and get them out... the cuberas dont really do that, they usualy make a jolt for over the wall or something but dont go in the rocks like the dogs.
