Frickin' Jake.. spearfishing Belize

  • Well, since all my photos posted here from Facebook are gone, I guess I have to start a new thread.

I got a decent little dog snapper and a cero. That's me with the cero in the water. Jake....I'll let hiim tell the story. He's making me feel old

But the bike is working. I laid on the bottom up to 1 min 50 sec.....had a cubera come and check me out three times on the dive but he was too smart. Let a couple blacks go too. Three weeks since I was last in the water. My legs hurt today. Shit. But yeah....having more and more fun just diving. The fish....an added bonus.

  • Bike workout is grate for us, nice fish there Hank congatz and thanks for sharing it with us:).

    Sadot Hernàndez.

  • Strong current. Had some bubble blower friends out who want to start free diving. I was going to tell them to take a course.....:D.....the lady already ordered a Wong GR 55 rear handle plus. I'm bringing it back from Hawaii in a few weeks.
Anyway, as mentioned, the current was ripping so I was dropping everyone off outside and herding them in through the cut. Jake got the nassau near "the house" and said there were blacks hanging around.
Dropped them again and Mo pops up and says, "Jake shot a big cobia".
First thing I said was, "shoot it again"!!! This was the same place I lost that big one earlier this year.
But Jake had already bear hugged the fish so no one could shoot it haha. He brought it to the boat and took a turn driving so "the old man" could have a turn in the water.
I did a few drifts in and didn't see much. I had Jake drop me way outside as the tide had slacked a bit. I drifted around on the dropoff and found the big school of dogs.
Beautiful big silver mass hanging only about 20-30 feet down, I dropped down and laid on the bottom at 60 feet and waited. Sure enough they came right to me. I had to pick one out of the mass. Got one and took it to the boat. I told Jake to anchor and dropped down again. Same thing....it was like they knew me and were coming to greet me.
But I was really careful to not make any move towards them at all. Even when I shot, I pulled back, looked away and swam up and away from them. We got three but then having 4 people in the water seemed to spook them. The would come but just out of range. Then they went deep. Nice day but it's getting cold....time to bust out the 3 mm open cell.

  • that cobia almost tore the flopper and herself off my shaft, had to do the bear-hug... didnt stop fighting until i got her in the boat.. really strong.. awesome fish!!

  • Nice day playing in the shallows, but with some smart ass snappers. Jake, Mo, Tino, Dukes and me went to this shallow cut where the dogs come home to roost in late afternoon.
We got there early just to see what was happening because we've only gone there late before.
There were lots of snappers....muttons, dogs, silk, schoolmasters....small but not bad, and some black and white margates.
I saw maybe the biggest dog ever but couldn't get close. I was just drifting around in water from 4 to 20 feet deep. Not so good vis as the water was coming out of a very shallow spot inside the reef. Cold too.
I passed on a lot of smaller fish but finally got the one nice dog. Jake got another one and the black and the yellow jack.
It was really good practice. Laying and waiting for 1 min 30 or more....the smart little bastards wouuld come in....and turn....come back.....and turn......on and on like this. Good fun. haha.

The other pic is the three boats under my house....which is becoming "Jake and Hank's Boat Service". The bubble blower friends or ours bought a skiff and twin 40s. We're putting it all together for them.

I'm outa here tomorrow. Honolulu bound and down.
