Kayaks and spearfishing

  • I have a couple of Kayaks now, a moorea and a Cobra Fish ´n dive. A kayak could be rigged to be a serious spearfishing rig. Around here the kayak is ideal to get to the rocky spots around San Juan de la Costa. Do you have any ideas for improving a Yak for spearfishing?

    I'm a Speardiver, not a freediver

  • Look for ideas in the kayak fishing forums and adapt them to your spearfishing needs. kayakfishingstuff.com is among the best and most informative. Something like an insulated fishbag sold in that same website, a milk crate for gear storage maybe some paddle holders for the guns. Its all a matter of personal needs. I love to fish from my kayak and will try spearfishing very soon.

  • Here's a repost of a Scupper Pro I once owned and sold. It will give you a good idea of what I put into it. I got rid of it because it was too much of a hassle to carry and launch by myself and even more so after a few hours of diving and being tired. I find I cover better ground just swimming. Maybe it was just me but I found this kayak (the only one I've tried) to be cumbersome and hard to get going. Much more so in a little bit of chop. Pulling it as a float was possible in flat seas with no current or going in the same direction with the current. I understand that Ocean Kayak just started to make the scupper pro again because it was very popular and people were asking for it. If I were ever to get another kayak I'd look for something lighter.

  • monster slayer,
IMHO one of the most important improvements to my yak is the hobie cart. I don't know if you have a yak cart already. Seahunter49 has 2 in his pix above. {Nice yak seahunter49} I redesigned my hobie cart just for my application. I dive off Hollywood Beach and the sand is very soft and deep and my Hobie Adventure is very heavy after I load all my freedive gear in it. I bought the standard Hobie cart with hard rubber non inflatable tires and added 2 wheels to each side. My cart now has 3 wheels per side and goes right over very soft sand beaches fully loaded and never has a flat due to the hard rubber tires. Just my opinion. Let me know if I can help further.

    never dive alone
    never dive without a vest

Yup, a cart would be nice, cause those are heavy things. Thank you so much hau. The diving advice is also wellcomed ..

  • Good point hau. Now I'm thinking what could've been if I didn't sell the yak and tried that. Even with those balloon tires you see on my cart dragging it in the sand with the cart was just a little easier than without. Oh well, at least the PITA of taking it off and putting it on the roof of my van was an inescapable fact.
