Lionfish Derby

  • I am open no the 30th and always willing to toss in for gas! Let's kill some invasive fish!

It's a $100 team reg. fee till the 27th. We get one more person and split it 4 ways.

  • The waiver states that I must be a certified scuba diver... I am not. Am I still allowed to participate? Do I just leave that line unsigned?

EDIT - just got off the phone with REEF, they are going to look into how to go about signing off the waiver forms for non certified applicants. I intend to freedive so being scuba certified shouldn't change my eligibility according to the lady I spoke with. They are suposed to get back with me within 24 hours.

2ND EDIT - The general manager just called me and said non certified divers can still participate and sign all of the paperwork just like a certified diver would. We will just be listed as skin divers.

  • Im not opposed to paying but it's lion fish were talking about here. Imagine how many more teams would be out there thinning the population and bringing in data on the population.

  • japsw, that is true but I think it's obvious they are also raising money for their NPO. It's a good cause and I like to eat lionfish so I am in!!

I am a SCUBA and freediver; but I'll be free diving as well. I can always bring the bubble gear in case we need to move out deeper.

  • Ok so who is in? I will register the boat before the 27th so we avoid the price jump. essentially its $25 a head plus gas. PM me your name, cell number, and I will get us registered. We can hand in the waivers at the meeting on friday night.

    PM sent.

Get on it Lunker! Invasive bastard fish are gunna die!!! Beers and lionfish BBQ to follow!

  • They are more nocturnal feeders and tend to keep rather stationary during the day typically hiding under rocks, ledges, etc. Just have to stick your head down and look.

We'll definitely need good lights and backup tools in case the gun isn't a good method for where they are holed up.

Anyone know a good LF tool we can make easy/cheap?

Pole spear I think will be key.

Edit: Mike I can make the capt meeting probably. I just need to run to the oceanographic center in Dania after work to check on a project (ID and measure some fish) but I pass 17th on the way home so it should be no prob.

  • nicce GL guys... id bring a mini pneumatic personally... that way if i see two i can shoot one reload with one on the line and bag two.

  • I have a three prong pole spear that is 7' feet that I made, I was going to shorten it to 2-3' for use in holes. I will carry it with my gun. My plan was to drift dive with (hopefully) 3 people in the water and one in the boat, rotating out. Like Shawn said it is just a matter of sticking your head up under the rocks and finding them. Obviously if someone wants to throw out a lionfish hole we can hit it, otherwise lets let the current do the work. Judah if you can sign all of the waivers and forms and get them to either Shawn or myself so that we can turn them in at the captains meeting. I am going to wait until the 26th to register so that we have a reasonable idea of weather before we spend the money.

Speardiver brethren we need one more team member. So far it is shallow, lunker and myself. Please come support the cause, I promise we'll have fun doing it.

Judah, please PM me your full name and phone number so that I can fill out the registration next week.

Shawn - if you have a para tip I can bring you the other half of my polespear after I cut it down, should be easy to assemble the 2 and add a band.
