Hardline's Dive Reports

  • Starting this new thread so I can keep track of all my dives in one place!

Went out today at Lauderdale and found a nice little school of some 12-14in Mangroves. Managed to get 2 and I was reloading when a nice size Cero swam by and out of sight before I could reload. Oh well.

As I was swimming in I saw a Nurse Shark Pup lying on the bottom underneath what seemed like a spider web of mono line. I dove down to investigate and nocticed he had a hook in the top of his head near his eye socket and he was trapped by the line being wrapped around the reef. I started to see if I could cut the line near the hook but he became agitated and I did not feel like getting bit by this thing, even if it was small. So after a few dives, I managed to cut the shark free and watched it swim away. Was a good feeling knowing the shark will definitely make it. Then some idiot on the pier yelled at me for being too close and I told him I was "freeing a shark from all the trash "you guys throw in the water." All he could say after that was thanks. :cool2:

Viz was real good on the start of the dive 30-40ft and then dropped down to 25 or so as the day progressed. Current was running North-South so I was lucky to beat the green poop water that was sure to infiltrate the reef at any time. LOL.

This is not the shark I free'd but another one Judah and I saw on Saturday. I would have had some video, but alas I brought the GoPro and hit record to realize the memory card was not in the camera. :dumb:

    i like to spear fish

  • Finally got a big cooler with measurement marks on top. I need to do the same on my gun. What do you guys recommend? Dan, you should print measurement marks for aluminum guns with your vinyl printer. That'd be pretty sweet.

I use a oil base paint pen on all my pipe guns. I measure starting from 1" and add an inch to my desired mark. For example, mark at 13" for the 12" mark. The error is usually the first inch of a tape or ruler depending how they cut the end and rivet the end piece when applicable. I also print target species common to my area at appropriate length. The marks are easily touched up with the paint pen since the bungee clip and other factors wear the paint off and size limits change. I'm aprobably going to put my name and number on my guns the next time a touch up session is warranted now I'm thinking about it.

  • Cool video. Water is looking pretty nice. How the hell do you get turtles to let you follow them like that? Im always trying to film them and as soon as I get even a little close they usually bolt away at 20 mph.

I seem to run into turtles a lot when I dive and I have tons more videos on my youtube page. There are some turtles that are very skittish but for the most part the bigger ones let you follow them without running. I even had a Hawksbill come and swim next to me out of curiosity. Definitely a cool experience.

  • Went out today for about an hour and a half. Didn't really see much at first then the black that has been taunting me the past few trips out here finally met his maker. Got some video I'll throw up later. None of the grouper though because when I saw him I got too excited and forgot to hit record on the GoPro.
