On May 14 a Great White Shark was seen breeching the water in Palos Verdes Cove. The approximate size of the shark was 8-9ft. The underside of the shark was seen during the breech clearly showing the white belly. May 21 a second sighting occurred only 20ft from the surfers in the line up. Four eyewitnesses have confirmed seeing the shark on three different occasions.

If anyone spots this shark please shoot me an email. ladvr89@yahoo.com

    Thanks

p.s. Might be a good idea to keep speared fish off your stringer. Maybe on a float or sponger.

Do you think that's the same shark that's been seen around Hag's/Malaga? It seems to be about the same length. Will keep an eye..or two out.

  • I was at the top by where the Surfline reports came from and saw two or three sea lions about 500 yds off the kelp. Forgot the binoculars, but I could see them racing around zig-zagging and spending as much time out of the water as possible. Couldn't distinguish too much else, but I was hoping something would explode under them. I watched for a few minutes, but it was too hard to keep track in the windswell/glare.

  • I went diving Monday and before I got in I had a random guy approach me and start preaching about god and to be careful of things that bite in the ocean. That coupled with the sightings made me a little nervous and I cut my dive short. I know they are out there but its different when many people see them and they are jumping about. How much safer can you dive knowing the taxman is out and about in 10 foot viz?

  • Four more sightings over the weekend.

    I'm ready:D

Do you have a source for those?

Here's one from a little while ago.

Palos Verdes — On May 20, 2013 Jennifer Wessels, and an unidentified companion, were paddle boarding 1/3 of a mile from shore near Palos Verdes, between Terranea Resort and Pt. Vicente. It was 10:30 AM and she had been on the water about 2 hours. The sky was clear and there was a mild east breeze with an estimated air temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The ocean was smooth with a slight ripple and an estimated temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. There were kelp beds present 400 – 500 yards from the encounter location. Wessels reported;“I was prone paddling from Cabrillo Beach towards Pt. Vicente lighthouse with a friend and encountered the shark just past Terranea Resort (Rancho Palos Verdes). I was knee paddling and my friend was prone, when I noticed the huge grey shark about 30 inches wide, very girthy, and what I estimated to be about 12 – 15 feet long. The shark swam non-aggressively toward me, about 3 feet below and 1 foot to the left of my board. It was light grey. I yelled, 'SHARK! Paddle fast!' and I paddled fast toward the kelp bed in Pelican Cove. We took a break there before paddling back to Cabrillo Beach hugging the coastline and kelp.” Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

Think of how much tuna, yellowtail, and seals that shark must consume to swim each day......but what a beautiful fish to be removed from the sea and not consumed.:(

  • Those are some amazing animals but all these sightings are not convincing me to jump in the water. Are these sightings keeping any of you out of the water in these locations? Am I just being overly cautious by not diving these spots?

  • Beautiful?! it's death incarnate..

A purple-blue swimming Mako lit by sunlight in the blue water is the most awesome thing a diver will ever see.
Those bloody dead on the dock pictures make them look grotesque.
I love seeing and filming sharks in the water, makes me feel alive, that said I would try to kill one if I had no other choice.

My back is keeping me out of the water, so I fear unsafe drivers without insurance much more.;)

If I lived and dove up North in the triangle, a daily sighting of a big one would make me drive a mile or two to a different cove. We have done this at both local islands when we see one.....just move the boat a mile away and get back into the ''safe'' water. :D

In the ocean I fear props.
