Classic gun, classy fellow

  • Marco asked me to post pics of my buddy Doc's gun. Here's one of them he used yesterday. Sorry, no fish pics. We had really lousy weather (except for the first half hour when I took these pictures), rough seas and strong current in the cuts. I only got one grouper and a nice cero. Doc got his usual array of various good eating fish. Trunk, trigger, a nice hog....

Doc's a dentist and works with his hands a lot so making a gun is a lot of fun for him. He's been doing if for about 40 years and the only thing he had to buy was the trigger mech, shafts and tips.

Checking his bent shaft from the amber jack last week. He straightened it and used it all day.

Check out the shaft guide at the tip of the gun. He bent the piece of steel and screwed it down.

The trigger mech is attached to the wood with one inch PVC pipe.

  • Doc and his product. It still amazes me, the energy he has at 70 years old. I was wearing a 2.5 mm hooded vest with a 3.5 full suit and I got cold about the same time he did. He had on the vest he's wearing. I feel like a wanna be little kid (but I am only 56 haha) with my Wong, reel, computer......haha. These guys are true spearos who did it with whatever they had....pink snorkel and all. Unreal.

  • I know a couple guys like him. It will be impossible to make him change.

I can't imagine what he could do with a "modern" gear after he gets used to it...

He is in very good shape! Give him my kuddos.

    Marco Melis

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

WOW Marco, you are right...that is a scary thought.

    i like to spear fish

  • I fished with a old school cuban spearo "limpia fondo" down in sunshine key that is pushing in his high 70's who recently discovered carbon blades, he usually out fishes everyone on the trip with his old seac air gun.
