Pacific crevalle hunting!

  • Pacific jack crevalle/ caranx caninus are living in tropical waters of the Central America coast and are very similar to most of the Atlantic crevalle jacks …
The identification should be easy : a typical carangidae fish which main identification features are a dirty yellow deep and compressed body with a black spot on the gill cover.
As well as the other crevalle (bluefin, bigeye, giant..) this fish is a pretty strong fighter and this is why it’s also called by local fishermen « toro » ( bull) in Mexico or Costa Rica : whatever the size, this fish shows amazing stamina and strenght during the fight.
The medium size is about 4 to 6 kg and an over 10 kg pacific crevally is considered as a « big fish ». The IUSA world record is held by my colleague Roberto Reyes with a 10,9 kg capture.
A pic shows a 10,1 kg crevalle capture made off the Mexico coast and which has been unfortunately damaged during the fight by a tuna speartip : at the time I was hunting yellowfin tuna in the blue…
Unless you shoot and secure the fish by using an euro style shaft and hitting just behind the gill, you have better to use a small detachable spearpoint or you may sometimes loose the injured fish. …
You can see by chance this strong and fast swimming predator hunting on different spots : inshore on a rocky or sand bottom chasing for example in a sardin school, offshore patrolling close to a bank, most of the time a restless fish schooling. Larger and solitary fish could be encounterd around deep banks or pinnacles in strong currents.
By using an hanging flasher in the middle of the baitfish you should increase your chance to make a capture by attracting the fish from the depth to the surface, because of the fact that this distrustfull fish is usually difficult to get close.
In the reef the speared fish takes off in a split of second while trying to cut and tangle the shooting line in the rocks and in the blue water it does swimming fast to the depth pulling hard the line.
A shame for the gourmet spearo… the meat is red and the flesh taste is fair.
Pics showes captures made in the blue water and at over 80 feet depth off the Mexico Pacific Coast.

...A modest contribution about this nice fish... thank's for your experienced feed-back!
