Spearfishing in the Cayo Coco area?

  • Hi All,
I am working like crazy in Haiti and I may go for my first time to Cuba but will need to balance some spearfishing with family relax...have been suggested to go to the Cayo Coco are also since some other family members will be there...any suggestions for fishing spots and contacts?
    many thanks

  • I've been spearing there year ago about six time.
As well as in many tourist centers of the blue planet ( in Cuba in particular) you should find reliable spearfishing info in a scuba diving center;)... and could do something with a local diver...
Reef hunting everywhere at that time and amazing snapper hunting in the mangroves.

you should find a couple of vid taken in the area:

be carefull with cuban coastguards (florida coast is not too far)!!
my best cuban friend/ spearo there (cayo guillermo) lost his job after we were spotted while spearing somewhere in the blue!

  • Stefano: Do you know Riccardo Goraci? He is married to a cuban, lives in Rome and travels to Cuba oftenly. He spearfish there. He's a member of this forum. Shoot him a PM.

Also Pantoja (Sergio) was there not too far ago. Maybe he can jump in.

problem in bringing the spearguns and fishing gear trough customs?

less problem than bringing cuban cigars through the US custom...;)

a pic took at the time with a disposable camera on a little catamaran showing my cuban colleague...reef captures we made in a 2 hours hunting

catamaran hobie cat style is pretty convenient there

  • No problem bringing spearguns and/or diving gear into Cuba. Consider bringing with you gear that you don't mind parting with. If you make friends there that will take you diving you will see that they're all in need of gear, and often gifts from foreigners is the only possibility for them get it.

  • if u want o join me i'll be making a trip pretty soon . i was supposed to go december but had to cancel, so i'll probably be going in january of feb.. it'll be for a week and the trip will be all about spearfishing .

  • Dear all,
many thanks for the great advice and offers, I am finding planning a trip to Cuba more complicate than expected, Travel agencies in Santo Domingo or on the web do not seem to be able to confirm bookings, I can book flights with Copa, via Panama, but not sure of internal flights and hotels after arriving and with the family I was hoping to have something Confirmed....some friends are suggesting just to get there and then ask around for a casa particular and do not worry...off to London tomorrow where I hope it may be easier to book something at least for the first 3 days in Havana...

Dear Pantoja: what dates will you be there and where are you heading to?

    Ciao
    Stefano

  • You can have any taxi driver take you to a private house straight from the airport. You'll probably pay a bit of a premium but it will still be way cheaper than any hotel. If you speak Spanish and don't act like a naive tourist you should have no problem. A private house is much more fun than a hotel. Ask for something central, in the Habana Libre hotel area.

  • i'll be headed to the isles of youth, and not sure about dates yet. but if u go by yourself i got a guy who can hook u up with a casa particular. it's his job.

  • spearos there are very good , so there'ss not as much fish as there used to be. we do shore dives there in the southern coast. the drop off in the south east is a little far in some areas , so we have to swimm a bit, but the south west is right there, i'm saying that some areas as soon as you jump in you are in 50 -60 ft. if you have a boat , then u can go to the keys , wich are a little far , but there's still goof fishing there. those who have boats go there and fish comercialy. very beautifull bottoms and a lot of fish. and not to deep.

Can non Cubans travel there from the states yet?

a suggestion but I guess this combo do not exist now:
    contact a travel agency
try to make somewhere something wrong
the flight to this destination is free
Guantanamo Bay detention camp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

nice see sight possible and a mandatory pro freediving training class named waterboarding all inclusive
not sure you could get through the rresort with a speargun...:rolleyes1:

  • Hi, I still can not get any replies from my contacts regarding accommodation in Havana but I have changed my plans and wish to see your contacts at the isla de la juventud and then spend a couple of days in Trinidad...would you please send me details of your contacts and perhaps any travel tips to get there? many thanks, Stefano

  • how much do yhey charge u ? i don't think you can do that in isla de la juventud. my dad had a boat and it was to much trouble , so he sold it as soon as i left in august.
