• I had the privilege to spearfish Guantanamo Bay 2 years ago while my brother was stationed there as a Lt. Commander and we hit the popular spots such as Glass Beach, The Slot, Cable Beach and Philips Park. I know for a fact that I have never experienced more breathtaking dropoffs with such crystal clear water only a stone's throw from shore. Although the fish were extremely skittish, I managed to see the biggest Cubera Snapper in my life. It was well over the 50lb. mark. We shot some nice ceros and schoolmasters and a nice black grouper that did a number on my shaft before tearing lose.

My brother is no longer stationed there but hopefully someday I'll get the chance to return and get that elusive Cubera.;)

  • Guantanamo bay is probably a place inaccessible to Cubans, that's why you saw fish at all. The north coast of Cuba that I'm a little familiar with has great vis almost all of the time and the drop offs are very close to shore. There are places where you can catch bill fish and Wahoo right off the shore with hook and line. As a rule the taller the cliffs on shore the closer deep water and the gulf? stream is. I had pictures of these amazing places but lost everything when I reinstalled the operating system on my lap top without backing up the data first. I have great longing for this country and will go back one day.

Here are pics of a place called Yumuri that is very close to an idyllic diving and spearfishing spot that I found. You have to be careful with planning the points of entry and exit as sometime you have to combine a little cliff climbing and hiking along with spearishing. Does diente de perro ring a bell?

  • Great pics!

You know, one of the biggest Cuberas I've seen was speared by my buddy Carmelo in 10' just off the "Bahía de San Juan". 65 pouds of beauty... :)

Sometimes when it's yours will come out from your shower.... :D

PS: Carmelo is 6'3" and weights more than 220#

  • if you guys are coming to cuba there are still a few places with losts of fish i come from the province of camaguey and we have have keys in bouth sides of the island there is a place called jardines de la reina that is a paradice i have not been there for many years but it a group of many many islands where no one lives with dream like waters ill try to go in my mext visit.

  • I've heard of Janrdines de la reina. I understand it's a popular scuba sight seeing spot. I'm sure there's many virgin cayos that will provide amazing spearfishing, but I think a lot of things will have to change before they become accessible. Do you have any pictures of the area Alecrin?

I heard that Jardines de la Reina has the best inshore fishing on this side of the world. Also that only one Italian company has the rigths to charter fish the area and only catch and release. No one else is allowed to fish there. Is that rigth??

  • it is a bit dificult for a non cuban to get there as it is for a cubanbut in cuba eveything is iligal unles you know the right people i know some of the divers who work there and they all fish and police in cuba specialy in the provinces dont get envolve in what torist are doing if you have the oportunity to go diving there i dont think youll have a problem if you ask the guys to take you fishing.you also have JARDINES DEL REY which are at the north cost of cuba it is not as good as jardines de la reina but a lot easy to get to.my family has a small house in la boca a small place called punta de practicos with some very good hunters and is just a few miles from cayo sabinal one of the bigger cayos and there is still some good fishing if any one is going that way let mi know.lets hope thigs will change in cuba soon and things will be a lot easyer.
