Deep apnea s glass - anyone using?

  • It's coming time for me to leave behind plastic fins, but I'm not sure carbon is the best choice for me so I have been doing a lot of thinking about fiberglass, the deep apnea s glass intrigues me, and I'm very tempted to buy, as I havnt seen any negative reviews on them anywhere, but at the same time I havnt seen many reviews in general. With that being said, does anyone on the board have personal experience with them?

  • And for a little background on my diving, I bought a pair of cressi gara 3000 hf's when they first came out, and they have lasted until now, I regularly hunt in depths up to 60 feet, but will be looking to gradually increase that to the 85-90 foot range to take advantage of some deeper reefs in the next year or so. I'm a big guy (6'5, 260 lbs)

  • Dan is my friend, but just know I tell it like it is with gear, especially when it can mean my life. I love the Speardiver C 90 med, they can take a beating. I dive big surf and rocky coastlines.

  • My only personal experience with carbon fins is the look on a friends face when he told me how his c4's snapped, the speardiver fins look like they are more built for what we do. That's exactly what I'm looking for in a fin! Not something I've got to treat like a baby

  • Are the omer stingray footpockets a good match for the speardiver blades? I don't exactly live in a place where I'm able to try a wide variety of gear, most of what I buy I order based on reviews, discussions or trying on something for a few minutes that belongs to someone else..

  • Couple more questions.. C90 vs c100, according to the ol measuring tape, the c90 is similar in size to the garas, but for long surface swim sessions, coupled with multiple dives to 60+ feet, and also muscling fish around sometimes, what would be the better blade? I can be in the water up to 8 hours some days. It's not unusual for us to park 2 trucks a couple miles apart and then head out to to the dropoff and work the entire distance

  • Don't lose your time and money. Get carbons. If you swim a lot, the softer, the better. C90 is the model for spearfishing. Too long fins are cumbersome.

Be aware that you cannot treat carbon fins as they were plastics. Yoy cannot jump from a boat fins first or push from the bottom with them.

  • A word on foot pockets, do keep in mind the shape of your foot. Foot pockets are a bit like masks in that they are best tried on first.
That said, if you came from Cressis, you'll likely be fine. Cressi's are amongst the narrowest out there and Omer's are def wider.
I have wide, flat feet and my first pair of Cressis didn't work for me at all - they gave me cramps. I widened them with a heat gun and a shoe maker's extendable tool.
Later, I switched to Omer Stingrays and they suit me well. On my CF fins I have Pathos which I think are medium wide and light weight which is nice for traveling. But you have to glue them on as opposed to Omer's which is a screw-on job (making it reversible). I understand, that Dan has no love for them anylonger, but for me, they work wonderfully - I am small guy, doesn't kick super hard, don't fight huge fish and still do a a lot of non-spearing freediving.

  • For general spearfishing I would recommend the 90s. I have taken the spear diver 90's to 100' and back with no problems. (I've also done it in gara 3000's) I currently have a set of the C4 falcons a 100cm class fin. While I like them for diving deeper and they fit my kick style there are times when diving shallower than 60' that I would prefer a shorter fin. Also, while this may seem trivial, there are not a lot of bag options readily available for 100cm fins. 90's fit in a bunch of bags.

In case you are wondering I switched to the C4's after one of my c90's (in pathos pockets) flew off the boat. Working at a dive shop I could get a very good deal on the C4's and their new carbon has had fewer breaking issues so I tried them. I would not hesitate to recommend Dan's fins.
