IPhone marine maps or Garmin 76 marine maps

  • I want marine maps to kayak /freedivespearfish with.
I have an iPhone and a Garmin GPSmap 76
I can buy an iPhone marine maps App or I can buy marine maps for my Garmin.
    My questions are:
    1. Does anyone use iPhone marine maps or Garmin 76 maps?
    2. iPhone or Garmin, which should I buy?
    Thanks in advance

  • We use Garmin's here and are fairly good. Plus, your GPS is waterproof, your Iphone isn't.

Keep your cell phone stowed in a dry place and use it for what is intended (better if you don't have to use it). And use your GPS for what it is for. You won't loose your waypoints and will be able to find new ones exploring places where there are sudden deep changes.

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

lol with Hau Iphone you can probably shoot video underwater.. :)

  • Yeah West Marine makes a great little bag for the iPhone which lets you still use the phone while in the bag.

I have taken it out just tied to my float.

    Hau,
I think the big deciding factor could be how good is the reception while you're lets say on the 3rd reef around your dive locations?(I have used my iPhone as out as 5miles from south point Miami beach)

My experiences of the iPhone(3GS) navigational capabilities is from driving from key West to Canada and as far west as Kansas.
The iPhone lead the way on every trip with a paper map stowed away as back-up.
    Its a solid device.

  • spearos--this is just an update of my progress and to say thanks to all those that posted their replies.
Today I completed my pre-buy research about the iPhone marine maps app and the Garmin GPSmap 76 maps.
I bought the iNavx iPhone app from iTunes for $50. and it downloaded seamlessly to my iPhone 3g :toast:
I already take my iPhone out spearin in a West Marine DryPk. The DryPk has worked great for years so far.
The iNavx looks great on the iPhone, is clear, zooms and scrolls like all other iPhone apps and the GPS locator dot is an nice easy to see.
As I have been working overtime almost every night at work, my funds are such that I'm ALSO gonna buy the marine maps for my GPSmap 76. Bass Pro has the correct one for $140. an I'm headed out the door in a few minutes to Bass Pro to buy the GPSmap 76 maps.
I'm gonna be using and comparing the two systems as soon as the weather clears and I will report my findings here asap.
Again thanks to all those that offered constructive suggestions, insight and opinions.:toast:

  • spearos--I consulted Dan about this GPS issue and he voiced that he felt that a fish finder was an important tool for spearin and that got me to thinking.
So I did some more research about GPS / fish finder units and came across the Hummingbird 385ci Kayak Combo.
This 385ci WITH the Navionics Gold SD card is what I am gonna install in the next day or so and will report back here on now well it works.
Thanks to all for your help

PS; (more / bigger fish r gonna die)

  • so excited when I got your text earlier...great purchase!!!

you will be installing the transducer inside the yak correct? yes, i know you will. what you should know is that lowrance/eagle makes several transducers that work through hull, I am sure Hummingbird does too. make sure the one you get has a remote temp sensor or else it will only sense the water temp inside the yak..this seems unimportant but, it is huge for detecting termocline on the surface which is often very relevant to finding the fish :)

    i like to spear fish
