Raw food? Juicing?

  • So I have always loved fruit juice and I enjoy veggies but mostly as a side.i enjoy an occasional shot of wheatgrass at the smoothie place but I admit my eating is mostly protein and a side dish. I have been reading lately about raw diets and the benefits of eating more raw foods and I decided to get a juicer.
I did a lot of research and was gonna get a really nice masticating juicer but I decided to go cheap first to see if I liked it.

This went with some pork chops for dinner. More than I've eaten in a day ever. Pretty tasty too

Any one else eat experiment with raw diet or juicing? At least seems like a great way to use extras from the garden.

  • THe only thing I can think of when I read this was reading a tucker max story about him and a juicer he bought... and how ugly it turned out.

that being said... Ive only juiced up oranges and limes, but I do like a good mix of fruit, juice and yogurt blended up in the morning to get my day going.

  • Get a vita-mix. spendy but worth it. Blend green vegiies like spinach and kale with a carrot , broccoli, half a banana and just enough fruit to make it palatable. You get way more beneift. The recipe above is way to fruit oriented, not emphasizing green veggies. When you blend as opposed to jucing you get more benefit from the nutrients, fiber etc.

  • I blend my fruits and veggies as well to get the fiber and other nutrients that might not get into the juice. I also add a scoop of egg white protein and some coconut milk. Typical breakfast is a hand full of frozen berries, coconut milk and Jay Rob's vanilla protein or banana, coconut milk, peanut butter (optional) and chocolate flavored protein. Sometime I do apple, carrot, kale, celery and cilantro in the blender no protein. Its like drinking a salad. If you want to make your drink creamy and healthy add half an avocado it will give it a great texture and you wont even know its from avocado.

  • Awesome guys thanks

Dan- I got the Hamilton bay wide mouth for 50 at big lots. I put a bag in the waste catcher and the total clean up was about ten minutes.

I read about the spinning juicer vs masticating and I want a masticating one for wheatgrass and kale and to get more of the pulp.

I have a citrus press I love and use all the time and a blender. It is just I need a small kitchen for all te counter space.

    The recipies sound awesome.

  • I've been juicing (that's how my boat got its name) for about 10 years.
Lot of carrots but I'll throw anything in there. I've been through about 6 juicers.
Hamilton Beach is a common one here.
I would recommend not bothering with the 350 watt models. They burn out quick when doing carrots and harder veggies. Plus you have to cut them into small pieces. The last two I've had were "Big Mouth"...I think that was the name Hamilton Beach and it has 850 watts. It'll take down things the size of your wrist. ya man. A lazy man's juicer.
In between the juice, I do smoothies. Papaya, banana, oatmeal, yogurt, nuts, egg white....blend and gulp it down.
I guess in doing this we skip the chewing part of digestion. Not sure how that will come out. But I feel pretty good.

Dan, regarding cleaning. The only part that you have to scrub is the seine screen. An old toothbrush works. It's fast and easy. Cleaning the machine takes only a minute or two. And once in a while really a good scrub down.

  • Yeah hank. That's the one I got. It is a beast. Like a power tool when you turn it on.

The smoothie sound awesome. You put a raw egg in? How old school weightlifter of you

Oh and Dan, I forgot to clarify. The ten minutes I said earlier was including the time to juice and drink and clean. Including the time to prep the fruits, papaya skin is bitter as is kiwi( And I didn't know about the nectarine pit so I cut that out) Really was about 15 minutes from start to finished

I got one for $50 at Walmart when I went to my sister's a few years ago. It was more than double that here.

I get whey protein here sometimes but it's really expensive too. I can get 30 eggs for US$3.50. I fart a lot but I have an understanding wife. :D

  • For me I have to identify what the purpose I am making each shake for. Like- something good to drink, or I just want to down some veggies, or I just got done working out and want veggies and protein. Then I know what to mix up. Unfortunately some of the shakes we make with bunch of fruit are surprisingly high in sugar and not as good for us as we think. Sometimes to much of a good thing is a bad thing. Except it seems like with leafy green veggies. Then I don't think there is to much.

  • the best and cheapest way to juice all fruits and veggies is to use one of those Model32 Masticaters....i myself have a Custom Model34....though not everyone will be able to acquire that one...its for special people only ;)

  • I use the juiced stuff for a nice little snack when I make fruit only stuff. It comes out a little like baby food. Not great but I hate to waste anything

The carrot stuffs alone is good added to bread or muffins too
