Tuna from the dock...

  • What kind of "tuna" was that?

Yellowfin, I've seen it all now. ATTENTION: Shooting a finfish without being in the water and swimming is illegal.

    Cheer's, Don

  • What is meant by "finfish"?

A bony fish, such as a salmon, or a cartilaginous fish, such as a shark, especially in contrast to a shellfish or other aquatic animal.

  • So if I'm reading that right if he would of used a bow and arrow it'd be legal to shoot that tuna? Always get a kick out of reading hunting and fishing regs from other states.

    Yes.

  • Interesting. How is a speargun considered different than a bow? Maybe they figure it's more effective. But what if you used a bow to shoot a steel arrow? Anyways I'm not so keen on shooting fish from a dock, although I've done it before and it's actually more difficult than you'd think because of water refraction. I get much more satisfaction from diving and shooting. Just sometimes the kid in me takes over :)

Does anyone know the regs about shooting fish (in saltwater) from outside the water in Florida? I know spearfishing in the water within a certain distance from a dock is illegal.

  • Cocking that game gun on a public dock with boats, restaurants and onlookers is Flecking Stupid.

**** the spearboys. They're always doing shit like this. They teach their kids to break the law. Lots of little tricks. They take classes, get certified, then get sucked into the gear scams so they can all be heros on you tube. Check out the dive forrums. Theyre all over those things bragging about what they kill and posting pictures of illegally speared fish species in their avatars. Bunch of ****ing punks. No minds. Lots of rich turds with blood lust.

  • I know it may be a small difference but a speargun has a locking mechanism allowing the energy to be stored. This is unlike a bow in which the energy is stored by the person. Similar to the why they aren't allowed in the Bahamas. A speargun and a crossbow on the other hand are very similar and i'm not sure how the laws would differentiate them.

As for Florida laws, unless you are in a area the prohibits spearfishing within a certain distance from shore. I can't think of any laws that would prohibit it. (this doesn't mean there aren't any) It would also be a pretty hard thing to get caught doing. Unless you post a video of it.

Not sure what that tuna was doing in there but there are reports all the time of fish being in places they aren't "supposed" to be.

  • The rubber storage is in in the elastic band in it's elongated state, the mechanical trigger can hold for years unlike a bow shooters fingers. But we are missing the point... if that '' American Sportsman:rolleyes1:
stood on a high traffic dock(Dana Point is) in daylight with a cocked and locked cross bow shouldered in view of any of our armed F+G , Sheriffs or cops, the outcome could have ended very badly for him. The head line with be this: Man armed with cocked crossbow/speargun was shot by Harbor Police when he placed his hand on the handle.

This is Cali and acts like this makes local speros look like shite.

  • Bait

    Barge...;)

When I came to Calif in the 70's a 100+ lb'er swam into the harbor and was circling the barge in front of Turks, where I drank on rare occasion, later making the mistake of crossing close to the plank of a moored stick boat. One of the crew was still aboard (unlike the rest of me friends at Turk's) and planted a nice Lilly head into the fish. Needless to say very fresh YF tuna was consumed for days around every BBQ pit at Doheny beach.
    Wish I had a picture, but I don't.

  • "Shooting fish in a barrel" This kind of video reinforces the negative stereotype that a lot of the general public has about spearfishing. Not safe and not sporting in any way. :nono:
