Going to Fort Lauderdale for a week what should I do?

  • I'm taking a trip to Fort Lauderdale for a week with the family. Thinking about a trip to the keys and to daytona beach to see family. Would love to fish or dive but I'm not going to be able to bring gear. Any recommendations on fun stuff to do, good restaurants to try? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • I figured a florida based diving forum might have some advice on local attractions for like minded individuals. I guess not. bummer

  • Sorry you felt ignored. I don't do anything other than dive and take my dogs to the beach, so can't help much with suggestions for family stuff to do. A stroll down Fort Lauderdale beach strip can be cool, shops and restaurants as you'd expect. If you want to dive while you're here hit me up. If we get a calm day we can go out with my boat. You're welcome to use my gear.

  • Thanks Dan thats very generous of you. I would love to join you if everything works out. I appreciate the offer and am willing to help with gas, scrubbing the deck and pulling anchor etc. Any recommendations on awesome cuban restaurants?

  • I was in the area and was busy and didn't get to take you up on your offer Dan but I do appreciate it. Since my original post many things have changed (Graduated school and looking for work etc.) and I am considering moving to Florida as I have a job opportunity that might bring us to Jupiter. I was able to spend a week in the area and we drove from Jensen Beach down the A1A to Fort Lauderdale. It looks like Jupiter is a good family place and close enough to work for both my wife and I. Other areas we looked at were Boca, Del Rey and of course Fort Lauderdale. However, Jupiter is the most central for our work. If all works out well we may be in that area by the end of next month. Any advise for someone moving to the area from California? Thanks again in advance. :)

  • I have a question here since it is pretty much related to your post: If you have to choose a city in Florida to live (and spearfish, VERY IMPORTANT!) close enough to international flights, which one would you choose and why? Consider home prices, schools, etc.

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

  • Hookinfish, if it's spearfishing/diving related advice you're asking about, I think this area is easier to dive and offers more opportunities than what you're accustomed to in California.
Living here in general.. summer's hard because of the heat, the rest of the year is great.
I think south Florida can be a rough place, dealing with undesirables, so it's good to maintain a vigilant attitude. But this of course depends on where you go and what you do.

Marco, I think Fort Lauderdale can't be beat for convenience. Fort Lauderdale international airport is 15 minutes from my place. The beach is 5 minutes. Port Everglades to launch the boat into the Atlantic is 20 minutes. Homestead and the Keys, for the kind of diving you'd expect from some Caribbean destination is 1 to 2 hours drive away. Most importantly the Freedive Store is right there for all your spearfishing gear needs :)

  • South Florida is rough it what way? Crime, wildlife, or..? I will most likely be living in Jupiter but working in Stuart and my wife will probably work in West Palm Beach. As far as diving is concerned I imagine it will take a little time for me to find some spots and also understand the fish and game regs as its different then California. But I do look forward to it. I'm still negotiating my contract so we shall see what happens.

You also mentioned that the undesirables are related to what you do and where you go. Can you elaborate? Places I should stay away from?

    Thanks
