Bluewater hunting techniques.

  • Ive only just recently dabbled in bluewater spearfishing. Started bringing along gear while offshore fishing with my dad and jumping in on things we find floating. I enjoyed it quite a bit and was considering doing it more. But I am not exactly keen on having to find flotsam to produce fish.

Can anyone here share some insight and information on some other bluewater hunting techniques? I am interested in stuff like jigging flashers from the boat, chumming, swimming weed lines. The main target species are wahoo and mahi mahi off the SE florida coast.

    Thanks guys,

  • For wahoo, days near full moon, 3 days before and after. Usually fish the wrecks 120-200 feet jigging some flashers and chumming, they will usually come in for a look just dont chase them or make direct eye contact. As for mahi I think its just being in the right place at the right time. Heres a pic of my buddy Uavaj with a 50lb wahoo from last December using said method.

  • Thanks for the info Ronny. Thats exactly the kind of stuff I was wondering about wahoo.

Mike, you're building a bluewater gun right? I am thinking about doing the same. Not a tuna gun or anything, but a nice long 3 bander with two wraps. Im gonna use this next season to gauge how much I really want and need one.

Another technique I was thinking about using next season was trolling for mahi, getting a fish on the line, and then leaving it in the water to keep the school around. Maybe deploy some flashers / drop some chum. Then slipping in and taking the biggest.

  • Yeah i'm slowly building a gun, it will be a 3-4 band gun with an 8mm shaft and sliptip. I always bring my gun on trolling trips for exactly the reason you mentioned but only ever find singles with the gun on board

Thats how they shoot marlin in south america, troll a spread of teasers to bring the fish in. That hoo was shot with a riffe e120 with 3 bands :D you need to have patience and prepare for long days with no activity

  • Wahoo love flashers!
I haven't hunted wahoo in Florida but the way that I have always been able to get the closest to wahoo is to float on the surface like a log jigging your flasher setup that is attached to a buoy under you. When they come In I try to make a dive as quiet as I can and not look directly at the fish.
