Full Moon or No Moon?

  • I have noticed a few different threads where divers where excited about going out after a full moon to dive. As an angler I always avoided the full moon because the bite was always slow the following day and preferred fishing when there was little to no moon. Is my experience of lack of fish after a full moon from an angling perspective off from a divers perspective? What do you consider a good diving day when looking at a lunar calendar?

  • Fishing nigth, with full moon night, I do not like, new moon that shines on the sea plankton, if I like (fishing hook)

Spear fishing: Two days before and after any change moon phase, I like.
if the water is warm, turbid, no current ........

    José.

Creo que me iré de pesca!!!

  • For diving; a full moon makes first light a not so active feeding event, any other time first light and last light are very good for me with pelagic fish.

  • Here in Belize, spawning aggregations of cuberas happens at full moon and about 4-5 days after. The full moons of March thru May are when tourists come to see whale sharks feeding on the cubera eggs as they spawn. This happens just before and possibly after sunset.
And this is why I was out yesterday. There is another cubera spawn going on at one of my secret spots. :D
It will happen for the next couple full moons. I can go a week after and during new moon and the fish will be there but not in spawning mode and they'll be more spooky, harder to get......but not impossible.

Full moon night fishing has been good for me as well. Changes in the moon usually equates to tides and current with a full moon typically having a larger tidal swing so that makes sense.

    Don
Sounds like the same reasons I prefer not to fish on full moons during the day because of the nocturnal activity from the moons light.

That's very interesting. I didn't realize that the moon had so much to do with the snappers spawning activity. I guess its cyclic sort of like the spawning activity of the California grunion? Regardless it makes sense to chase them when they are preoccupied. Its like deer hunting during the rut I imagine.

Full moon today.....ya man. Jake and I are going out Sunday. Supposed to be calm.
During the full moon on spawning time, the cuberas seem to hang out in the same spot....muttons will be there too. They just seem...like they're on drugs. :D They will spook if you try and charge them but if you're a sneaky bastard you can keep dropping in on them and they'll hang around.

Hopefully the water will be more clean than last week.

  • The early grunion runs and the summer solstice have always produced for me but you should just dive whenever you have the opportunity without any preconceived expectations. I've shot wsb in every month of the year and carried YT up the hill in early November and late March.
