Default Picture posting tutorial

There are two ways to post pics.

1. The embedding method

Upload your picture to a picture hosting website like Spearfishing.Pics and use the direct link to the picture to embed it in a post. This method is the same as linking to any image that's already online, except you will have full control of the image. If you link to a picture that was posted by someone else, and the original poster of the image deletes it some time in the future, the picture will also disappear from your post. An embedded image looks like this.

Girl Kissing Lobster

Embedding is my preferred method of posting pics. I use the image hosting site Spearfishing.Pics, I recommend it because it's free, easy to use, and I haven't lost a picture since I registered my account 8 years ago. There are also other picture hosting sites that do the same thing.

The forum has software installed that automatically resizes remotely hosted pics that are too big to fit in the post. Once embedded in a post you can click on a pic to see it full size. It's better to resize your pics to less than 1000 pixels horizontal resolution before uploading them to a hosting website. Threads with pictures will then load faster, large size pics noticeably slow down the page loading speed. Even better resize pics to 720 pixels horizontal resolution and they will fit in the post without resizing and look sharper.

When you upload a picture to a hosting site you will be provided with a few links, you want the direct link to the pic. Select and copy it, then click on the "insert image" icon in the forum post editor. Paste the link into the box and click OK. All the "insert image" does is place one [IMG] tag in front of the link and one [/IMG] tag at the end of it. This is a code that tells the forum to display the link as a picture. You can achieve the same thing typing the tags. The embed code for the image above looks like this
PHP Code:
[IMG]http://spearfishing.pics/image/GirlKissingLobster.jpg[/IMG]
2. The attachment method

Please use the attachment method only for pics that are really relevant to spearfishing and should be a permanent addition to a thread. With attachments Spearfishing World forum is the picture hosting site, this significantly increases the data stored on our server.

The attachment method always places the pic at the bottom of the post. If you want to post a few pics with some writing pertaining to them it is difficult to maintain continuity in the post with the attachment method. It also places a border around the pic which necessitates the pic being smaller. The maximum image size is set at 670 pixels wide. The reason for this is that at that size the picture fits in a screen with 1024 pixel resolution without requiring scrolling sideways which throws off the whole thread. This means that if you upload a bigger image the forum will resize it to 670 pixels. You can attach any size image but it's easier for the forum software to process an image that is closer to the max size, if the image is significantly bigger the forum may not be able to process it.

To use the attachment method click on the "manage attachments" button. You'll be prompted to browse your computer for the pic you wish to upload or alternatively provide a link to the picture. Find and select the picture, then click "upload". Close the Manage attachments box, the pic will appear when you submit your post. Allowed picture formats are .jpg .gif .bmp You can add up to 5 picture attachments in one post. If you need to add more just repeat the process with another post. Using the attachment option pictures will display like the one below.

And don't copy image address and paste from Facebook. They must change the address over time because the picture will disappear here on SW after a while. I lost a bunch of photos on the "Fricken' Jake" thread.
