Howdy from Rhode Island

  • Hi All,

I'm a longtime hobby spearo who is starting to get serious about the sport. I got my start spearfishing in the Turks and Caicos chasing white margates, mutton snappers, and queen triggers with a Hawaiian Sling. A few years ago I moved to Rhode Island (that's what happens when you marry a Rhody girl) and am now having to get used to cold dark water, snap shooting as opposed to sighting and stalking fish from the surface, spearguns, wetsuits, and weight belts. Whew! All this gear just to get a little fish dinner? Well, the result of learning about spearguns and rigging, and weight harness, etc. has been that I've gotten hooked and become more serious and technical about my spearing. So, I'm here to continue to learn and trade ideas about how to be a better underwater hunter.

    Some specifics:

Quarry - striped bass, tautog, and trigger (hopefully some fluke and maybe eventually a mahi)
Equipment - Riffe metal tech 2, Mako wetsuits, Picasso fins, and homemade weight harnesses.
    Method - freedive
Locations - anywhere in Rhode Island that the vis isn't zero and the fish are around

I look forward to learning a bunch.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • Welcome fellow RhodyIslander:welcome2:
You should be coming up to the warmest time of the year for Rhody.

  • Welcome Jay, I started diving on the North East coast too, lots of great soeros in your back yard.
