Welcome Guests

  • I got an invite late Thursday afternoon to head out with a few guys I've been doing some work with. It was a pretty rough start, getting boat in the water and trying to find some bait for the guys. They were all anglers, but they know I spearfish and they were eager to see it firsthand.

The conditions were beautiful and we made it out to the deeper water for Amberjack. I took my time getting ready to jump in as the guys rigged their gear. The water was blue for the first time this year, since Ive been going out, anyway and we could see the AJs from the boat. I jumped in and put one on the boat in short order.

I decided to go on the up-current side of the rig to keep from interfering with the anglers on the boat. As I made my way around the rig, I saw a group of fish "hugged-up" next to the rig. At first I just dismissed them as Jack Crevalles and went about in search of big mangroves. A few dives later, I wound up coming up from behind them, at their level. One turned back to have a look at me and thats when I noticed that these were not, in fact Crevalles, but African Pompanos. NICE ONES!

I had never actually seen one in the water, but I have seen enough pictures to know what they were. I put a shaft through one, and for the first time in my life, had a fish pull me to the float! These jokers are strong! Being the nice guy that I am, I invited him and a few of his friends, home for dinner!

  • Pics posted in original post. I do apologize for the delay.

I have heard that these guys are around, but I had yet to see one since moving here 4 years ago. I baked a few pieces last night and it was quite good.

The anglers weren't having much luck that day. I had a few extra masks and snorkels in my bag, so a couple of them actually got in the water. The AJs were up high and they managed to shoot their first fish! I only had one pair of fins with me that day and I let a guy borrow them so he could fight the fish. I jumped back in the water with no fins and no top, as I also let one borrow it so he could load the gun.

The biggest kick they got was watching me frog kick with no fins and putting a shaft through another AP under a couple of pretty healthy Black Tips! The sharks started to get pretty "friendly" so we decided to call it a day.

One of the most rewarding dives I have done! To get some fish I had never shot before and then coach a couple new divers into their first fish was a great feeling:hooray:

  • nice haul john!!! i suspect now you're going to have some new dive buddies too.

  • They are a hard fighting fish. I've only seen one here and I shot it. 18 lbs gutted and gilled. I could stick my finger in the spear hold and feel his spine. But he still pulled me under 3 times. Like....8 feet under. I was using a reel.

  • Beautiful APs, congratz. I've yet to get my first one.

Did the f/p leave those marks on your foot or did you kick a rig leg diving barefoot?

Thanks Dan. The mess on my foot was fish blood, half-ass washed off:laughing:
