Amberjack and bad vis

  • Me, Ced and Gillo went out last Saturday for amberjack. Saturday was my only day off, and the only day that Gillo would be able to go before returning home.

We were fortunate that the seas layed down for a few hours. The visibility was absolutely horrible.
We were fortunate to get these fish. Took longer to suit up than it did to shoot the fish. Nothing huge but still a good time. Gillo's first AJ.

    He was very happy.

    So, a funny story about that;

Gillo said "i am not getting in that visibility with the Bull Sharks"

Cedric told him that "we never see sharks here!" I looked at him funny because we see them there all the time.
Gillo got in and shot his first fish in the USA, and his first Amberjack.

On the way home, Ced told him that on our last trip to that spot, we lost a jack to a huge Hammerhead, and a Bull shark tried to get Patricks fish. Gillo was glad he got the fish, but said he would have not got in if he kn ew that.

About 10 ft at the most, after you passed thru the 25 ft layer of 3 ft vis. The stone shot gun was 80cm.

I've been dry too much this winter......just had to check under me den chair and make sure there was no eaters,:D

brrrrrrr….:@….I have dived water like that off our beach here. The thought of barracuda and bulls lurking is always there. It's hard. The fish appear and disappear like ghosts. You have to be quick on the draw to get anything. Again, fine shooting there. :toast2:

  • That IS funny:-)

We are going next weekend weather permitting to Texas for Wahoo. Lots of big Wahoo, but Lots of sharks.

The water will be a lot clearer, or im not going to get in.

  • Good luck Keith, sharks are part of the blue water experience as a few on here already know. Poor vis (10-7feet) and sporty sharks are part of the high risk diving experience.

  • Go get you some Giant stripes...yewwww!!!

Cant wait to let you know how it turns out!

I got my 68" Koah rear handle plus, Mori tip and shaft, float lines, floats, bungees, and flashers.
Been spearfishing for over 30 years, and i am just now going for blue water fish.

Ced says its a lot less difficult than shooting AJ'S in less than 10' vis at 60ft.

Never been in 100ft vis, cant imagine what that will be like.

    Cant wait!

  • And thanks for putting up with all my questions about spearing Wahoo.

My pleasure, many here put up with mine when I first like you decided to go into the Blue... its a lot easier than you think. My observation is it got harder the more I did it, that was probably due to the fact I wanted it more and more [emoji6]. When I first started I was just like whatever and expectations were low. Keep expectations low brother, it makes the shooting easier [emoji4].
