Azores fishing!

  • Is there anyone on here that is in the Azores? Hopefully on Terceira if I'm lucky! I'm want to learn how to spearfish and freedive and I'm hoping someone would be able to show me how and teach me. We can maybe meet up someplace or just get in the water and learn from there. Thanks so much!!

  • Hi Nick - I'll jump in to try and help since your post was directed at spearo's that live in the Azores and aparently no one here does. I have a couple of suggestions that might be helpful.

1). I did a dive in the Cape Verde Islands, several in fact, and it was very different from what I expected. My guess is the Azores is somewhat similar even being out in the Atlantic further and more north. The Azores has some big Blue Fin Tuna but way out of your league as a beginner. Most of the spearo's I read about in the Azores are Blue Water spearo's.

    2) Go to some dive shops, boat marinas, etc., and ask around to see if any shallow water/reef divers might take you diving with them. Start slow and dive the shallow rocky reefs fr smaller reef fish.

    3) get some inexpensive long plastic fins or even scuba type fins for shore diving. Get a good fitting mask simple J snorke (don't fall for the type that keeps water out with a stopper on top). A simple pole spear (forget speargun fr now) and get comfortable shore diving the shallow water. Oh, even though the Gulf Stream passes close to you - you will need a wetsuit - get an inexpensive 3mm wetsuit. Even a surfer wetsuit to start and of course a weight belt.

4). Many say take a course, dive with a buddy (good idea) but many of us (me too) started just like I stated. By ourselves exploring the shallows and slowly get comfortable to see if this really is what you want to do.

Good luck and come back to tell us what the waters are like, what type of shallow fish are found, etc. I've only heard about the giant Blue Fin Tuna spearing and would be great to hear what the shallow waters are like.

Most of all - be safe & have fun!!

  • Indeed :D

Brauny, send me a PM with more information (when, for how long, what you need, etc) and I'll help you out...
I'm not in Terceira but know people that are.

    cheers

    Marginatus,

I'm not able to private message you. It says I don't have the privileges to send messages yet. But I will be in Terceira for a year. I have all my gear (fins, mask, wetsuit, weight belt, gun, etc.) I really just need someone to show me around at some of the places to dive, if there are shallow reefs or just bluewater diving. And most importantly, I need a dive buddy! Safety Third! (Rule 1. Always follow rule three. Rule 2. Refer to rule one. And Rule 3 is always Safety! lol) Thanks for your help!!

And thanks everyone else that jumped in on this too! It's good to know that there are people looking out for even an extremely new guy that wants to learn how to dive!

  • Can anyone PM marginatus for me? I keep trying to but it says I don't have permission to send private messages? I am just trying to get into contact with him so I can start learning how to spearfish! Thanks!!

Contact Dan through hs shop email contact and he can set you up for pm's or just exchange email info.

Good luck and please post back on what the diving is like in the Azores. Fala Portuguese?

  • Finally hooked up with someone who is going to take me out and teach me how to spearfish! So today I went to get my spearfishing license for the Azores and what do you know. Their computer systems are down! :frustrated2: I wanted to hopefully dive tomorrow! Hopefully I'll be able to get it tomorrow and dive in the afternoon! Keep an eye out! I'll have my gopro and will hopefully be able to throw up a picture of my first fish that I ever speared!! :thumbsup2:

  • Hi, did you contact that guy i suggested?

It's a quick thing to get the licence... bad luck...

If people are interested on some Azorean pics and footage maybe I can post some stuff (I usually don't...) but maybe wait for brauny's stuff...

    Good luck

  • Please do - would love to see what it looks like (reefs/structure/bottom).

  • Yes I did! I talked to Gui! He even has a spare Gopro mask mount for me to buy! I can't wait to get it mounted and get in the water! Thanks for all your help!

Oscar, I know right now I don't have a very good breath hold. But I will do my best to get you some pictures of the bottom and reef structure and hopefully a few fish!
