Just before Mathew hurricane will arrive off the north Atlantic coast, we took advantage of a couple of becalmed sea break
I’ve been pioneering giant bluefin tuna free diving for about ten years and, in my modest experience, the weather parameter is the master of the game.
Was recently told that herring schools have been patrolling for one week off the Atlantic Canada coast..
If you plan to spot a tuna school swimming close to the surface by boating far offshore, you may play with an other parameter: a kind of lottery... I won only about one time every two years..
but our luck was strong yesterday at about 2pm;)
action!
birds on the surface!
a whale!
...
So I free dove about one hour among the "greatest world's fish" before the tuna school vanished in a split of seconds to the abyss
There a green / cold water with tons of small jelly fish + multiple herring debris coming from a recent slaughter made the visibility fair
As usually the thought of a possible deadly collision made by a 600 to over 900lb restless fish ( running at about 60mph) may give you thrill!
The whale made a pretty short visit keeping briefly one eye to me
Fortunately no shark sighting: this offshore place is a GW and giant mako shark seasonal « playground » … (seals):(
Back to the dock I have to drive about 500 miles to get back home and I’m keen to edit the vid in the next days.
Bluefin tuna in the depth!!

That was awesome. Thank you for sharing. It was interesting to see several tuna pass on the same dead herring one after another. Looks like you were right on them. How much of a push from the water do you feel when they wiz by at that speed?
-
thank’s for your friendly feedback!;)
The school was made of about less than hundred fish from 600 to 900 lbs (I spotted one about 1,000 lbs at 0’ 25''of the vid)
A 1,000 lb tuna capture pic may show you the real fish size better tan the vid
the greater are the fish, the smaller is the school, in my modest opinion this tuna rule works all over the blue planet.. as well as you never find in a school little tuna among giantsFor the last years I got a couple of near miss with tuna. I felt in my body the incredible fish power
Collision= death because the bf tuna head is hard as steel. This may happen only during the first minutes. I observed that these giant fish do first hunting as if you do not exist, while eating all the fish close to you.
Then they do not try to catch a prey swimming close to you by avoiding it.Seems to me they probably identified you as a possible predator and leave you a place in the slaughter. "take your portion! »
Whales may breaching the surface to eat the debris
At the time the school vanish in a split of second, you have to get back to the boat: waiting in the green/ cold water is time wasted because they never be back!!... -

Ha! Well they don't want to be greedy. They know you have to eat too. So cool.
