Gopro color correction filter for spearfishing

  • Does the red lens start making a difference at only deeper depths?...like 80 plus? (we are talking about greekdiver here)

If the water is clear, you will see the difference. A place like Bahamas, the red filter will shine.

5:10 is at 87ft when im pulling grouper out of hole. I am using red filter here. Even in the picture of the video, you can see very nice colors.

No red filter. You can clearly see the difference. Colors are more blueish and white. Look at the 1:30-1:35. The coral is not colorful like it should be. This is at 95ft.

  • I've been wondering about this...

Since the filter darkens the image slightly (filtering light out), would editing the video in post-production work better?

  • With the red lens, i edit the colors only when i am shooting out of the water. There is a slight redish tint.

I dunno, I think the red lens is good so far from what I have seen. Is it necessary? Absolutely not.

Just a thought I had. Generally for photography, one doesn't use filters in low light as the may marginally affect shutter speed. Was wondering if same would apply to UW video, considering it's almost always considered low light at depth.

The filter sounds great to me... anything to make things look better without post-processing is obviously much preferred.

  • Well there are 2 videos to compare. What do you think? The Florida one has much clear viz than Baja.

How do you guys compare both videos?

  • No way to really compare apples to apples except to have 2 gopros going at same time.

Seems like quality is good in both. :)
    Think I'm over-thinking things as usual. ;)

  • Is the filter intended to add more of a red tint to underwater video?... Since red is the colour of the spectrum with the quickest reduction at depth

    Exactly.

The only "problem" is that it does so at the expense of filtering some of the available light out.
Nevertheless, it's probably the most user-friendly solution to having a better color palette at depth.

  • Red is the right filter to use. IMO the red filter is more suitable for scuba divers who stay at depth filming for longer periods of time. %30 of my footage would be topside and at the surface, and I don't like how that looks with the red filter see vid below. The shallow parts are tinted pink and out of the water are washed out with red. The filter is good quality and does its job at depth.

  • I have the snake river prototyping red lens. It's badass, you can REALLY tell the difference. I'll post some pictures when able. I usually don't dive too deep though ~40.

The bigger question is what the color already is. We get a Crap ton of green water here. SRP says magenta is better for that, but the red one seems to do just fine (SRP is expensive tho, expect to pay 90$ for filter +adapter)

  • Thanks, I will go with red. I used red filter before and I like how it improved the color underwater, but now I was curious about red vs magenta.
It would be great if the filter had a little lanyard so you can pop it off when at the surface.
