Water spouts

  • It is a beautiful picture. No doubt.

As the the reality of it....the sun seems to be still pretty high to be creating that much orange. That's usually post sunset;....unless it's a heavily polluted air? Coast of China?

  • Ah ha, right u are Hank...usually a sunset indeed, throws this much color. I have messed with color temp settings thru Picasso b4 that wud do this...but this is almost too awesome to be "real".

  • It's an awesome shot period.

Almost all professional photos are processed in photoshop or an equivalent software. It doesn't make them any less impressive. Very rarely will a camera capture an image exactly the way the human eye sees it. Color levels, contrast, brightness, exposure are all small tweaks that can make all the difference. It takes a lot of skill to manipulate a photo properly.

Besides photography is as much an art as anything. It doesn't have to be a perfect recreation of the scene it is the artists perspective just like a painting.

  • I agree with everything you said Xan. But there's a line that when crossed in photo manipulation, the image becomes too far removed from reality. This is akin to cheating, more so when the image is supposed to be of a natural phenomenon. And that's the feeling I get when I look at the image, like someone is trying to fool me.

I've seen 3 or 4 water spouts at the same time going out of Homestead, but they didn't look so close together maybe because we were closer. The day became overcast and grey. The feeling I got from the event is definitely not what I get from that picture. The other feeling I get from the pic is that I'm about to have a religious epiphany :)

  • I agree Dan there is a point where it can go too far for my tastes. There are also times when the program is deliberately used to deceive which I don't agree with either.

But I have seen 3 and 4 water spouts that close before and I have seen sunset/sunrises produce even more dramatic colors than the ones in the picture. In my view I don't see this as "impossible." It might be a little more orange than I would have expected but certainly a possible shot. Hell the white balance might have been off a bit. That being said I do think there was a little retouching but I don't think it was egregious or necessary to point out.

Creole5 says he say it on a social media sight. By the aspect ratio I'm going to take a guess and say Instagram, which is known for its filters and other "quick and dirty" adjustments. Probably moved the saturation slider just a bit too far.

  • Good point Xan...camera lenses can pick things we dont see with the eyes. Its a fine line these days with technology, but for my taste, if kept within reason there is still an art to it. You still have your old school film photographers who feel digital manipulation is cheating to any degree. I have a Canon DSLR and have played with editing programs and also have seen amazing digital photos....too amazing.
So to also agree with Dan, ive seen some that leave the realm of a "photograph", and become a colorful painting, so to speak. Its not really a photograph anymore and i almost feel as im being fooled.

Hahaha, u nailed it Dan.. a religous epiphany it is. I just zoomed it up to take another look. Look between the left and middle spout...how i missed it ?? because now wen i look at it, its all i see :cool2:

That's true. I didn't mean to criticize the photo. It's just my inquisitive nature to wonder about what I was seeing. If I was on my boat I probably would have turned around and gone home. :D Red sky in the morning....

I have seen skies like that in Manila, where the smog is really bad. The sun is halfway to high noon but the amount of light appears to be more like sunrise. And it's orange too.

  • Ok, i guess someone shopped the hand coming down between the 1st and 2nd spout...because it wasnt in the original i posted :@
