Action in PR

  • Hello form PR!

Went out this weekend to check out my favorite spot. I stayed shallow since I was alone but some parts are 45+ meters. Moon was full, hight tide, and the fish were all over the place. Lots of cero mackerels, dog snappers, and jacks hitting the sergeant majors.

On the first dive I found a nice mutton. As soon as I saw it I knew she was coming home.

I usually swim back to shore after getting a nice fish, to prevent loosing it to the sharks. But... there was so much action that I decided to stay and try my luck with the dogs. Saw some movement at the bottom, dove and found pargo guasinuco (cubera). Aimed at the gill plate, took the shot and he was done. As soon as I reloaded the gun, two nice cero started swimming around me, shot the bigger one and it took of with the gun.

I already had 3 nice fish, but still wanted a dog snapper. A couple of minutes later, the reef sharks found me, didn't want to loose any of those fish so I headed back to shore. I was recording every dive, but forgot to empty the card before diving, so the cubera and cero footage was lost :(

Don't know how to upload pics, any help? Thanks!

  • Sounds like a perfect shore dive.

    Look forward to the photos.

    45 meters is shallow? :cool2:

  • Nice mutton! Are you sure you are talking about meters and not feet? In the video it looks more like 20 feet than 20 meters to me.

Anyway it was a great shot to a nice fish.

When I lived there, just a handful of guys could spearfish freediving past 70'. And no one could freedive to 45 meters.

Even in the Med, it is very unusual to find someone who can dive to 45 meters.

But again, nice fish and welcome to the forum. :)

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

  • Nice mutton, wicked shot as well

    Thanks George!

Gracias Marco! Yes, meters, but I'm not implying that I can free dive to that depth. I expressed myself incorrectly.

The mutton was around 30 feet. The next drop is 57ft, but if you keep swimming out it gets deeper. Dive partner went with tanks to explore the area, but stopped at 130ft. I wish I could free dive to the bottom of that area!

  • Nice mutton.

Thanks Hank! I've been reading your fishing reports for quite some time.

Where North? Los tubos? Cataño? San Juan? I dove there a lot too. Also at Isabela. Good memories...

I met Sein while diving in Isabela, I think you guys know each other.

Just the North coast... :D My father once told me, " tu eres dueño de lo que tu callas". I've ever seen a diver in that area and prefer to keep it that way.

These are the fish from that day.

  • I wanted to dive this full moon but my dive partner had to work so I went alone. There was a lot of bait! Ended up with a nice ocean trigger, a cero mack, a small dog, and a hog. Both the trigger and hog are not common to find them on a shore dive, at least for me. I did shot a cubera, but the lower jaw broke and and it teared off :( Spent the next hour looking for it under a rock with only one band loaded, and suddenly a nice dog appeared out of nowhere. Didn't pull the trigger since I was not too confident in the shot with only one band. Never saw those two snapper again. Either way it was a productive dive.

    here's a video
