Suggestions for a big blue water gun

  • Hey,

I'm looking for suggestions on what makes a great bluewater gun as well as suggestions for a gun. I would prefer a 60"+ wood gun. This year, I have set a personal goal set to take a few large fish such as a blue marlin and next year I'm putting together a trip for a bluefin in the 250lb range. I already hunt with a riffe 120 euro, so i dont need a dolphin wahoo gun.

I dont want to spend ridiculous amounts of money for flash and paint. Spending less than $1100 would be great because I like putting my money toward trips. My guns also take alot of abuse because they get crammed into horrible places that are not climate controlled because I'm a traveling sportfish captain.

I prefer to place my hands on items of at least experience them but apparently with bluewater guns that is not going to happen. It is hard putting faith into a gun for that ONE fish and ONE shot with out having experience with bluewater guns.

Also, please dont fill this forum up with "hear say" This a very important decision and I need help from people with real world experience.

    Thanks
    Michael

  • It would be hard to get what you want for what you want to spend. I would look at the following guns:
    - Wong Super Magnum
    - Sea Sniper
    - Merlo
    - Hamilton
You can expect to pay $1,800 to $2,500 for one of these hand crafted masterpieces. I love them all so I am not going to try and steer.you towards any particular one. Look at it this way. You will be diving the rest of your life and will hopefully go on some epic trips. Get that special gun that is made just for you.:toast::toast:

    Good luck.

  • I have a friend selling a Speadiver Striker 62". The gun is all teak, enclosed track and ballasted for a 5/16 shaft with 4 5/8 bands or 5 9/16ths bands. The gun has only seen the water a few times and is still in like-new condition.

The gun is designed and built by Gil Gacula. This particular model was designed for the "purist" underwater hunter. No-nonsense approach with simple lines and simple functionality. I believe the website may still be up, but I am not sure. You can look up spear-diver.com. I will try and find some pics.

I believe that he wants $625 for the gun, which will include shipping. The gun comes rigged with a Mori shaft and slip-tip.

Please PM me if you are interested and I can give you some more info on the gun and put you in contact with the seller.

  • I tried to buy a 63" yokooji ono, I told the guy I wanted it but I was fishing when he called me. I called him back 2 hour later and he said he promised it to another guy because he thought I wasn't serious. Oh well.

I'm not looking to spend a fortune and I know it doesn't take a $2000 gun to kill big fish. I just have to find some one who isn't building a work of art. I need a reliable tool to get a job done.

Also, I cant find any info on a "Striker". No pics or references?

  • With today's economy, there are always good deals around the web. Just keep your eyes open (and cash in your pocket) and you'll find what you're looking for less than 1000$.

For a fraction of what you're looking to spend and the abuse you're going to give to the gun, I'll give a try to a long (140 or more) twin 16 mm band 7.5 mm shaft railgun. It's what they use in South Africa for tunas up to 200 lbs.
