Rob Allen spearguns prone to accidental discharge

  • I think it's time to bring this issue out in the open. Rob Allen is the economy and sometimes straight up speargun of choice for many divers, but this doesn't mean it's a quality speargun. Rob Allen spearguns are known to self discharge. If someone happens to be in front of it when it does.. you know the deal http://spearfishing.world/spea…atch-where-you-point.html.

I've been witness to one such accidental discharge. Hector's Rob Allen went off on it's own and the shaft shot into the reef. I remember hearing it go off and thinking someone just shot at a fish. I looked behind me and saw the shaft stuck in the bottom 15ft away.

Recently a friend who is also on this forum told me that his rob allen fired by itself. He got the mech replaced. Apart from these two incidents that I know about personally, I've read about rob allen spearguns discharging on spearbored. This is enough evidence to show that it's a recurring problem.

Here's a picture of a rob allen trigger mechanism, as you can see it's mostly plastic. I think a speargun trigger mechanism should be all stainless steel. A trigger mechanism is not a component where you try to lower production costs at the expense of safety.

  • wow, good warning...

off hand, do you know which trigger mechs are prone to this and which tend to be more robust.
I have heard of the biller/ hornet mechs failing when overpowered, but nothing about normal use.

    i like to spear fish

  • AB Biller/ Seahornet Triggers do get damage when overpowered i remember changing 4 of them in 1 1/2 years. Due to the fact that i used to put 3 5/8 bands a little shorter than normal for that extra power. They never fired by them self they just wont accept the shaft no more. It never occured to me to open it and find out what was the problem. I remember shooting the gun and on the reload something felt ackward and the shaft wont stay inplace. I always beleived a piece broke inside and it sank in the water rapidly. My friend saw it when it happened. and he saw the small metal piece going down. I was concentrated on the fish:D. But i never get to see the metal piece. I also recall having an issue once with a RIFFE trigger also. But was a manufacturer issue, it will not shoot, a piece of metal was jamming the whole mech, They change it same day at the store and I was good for life:).

  • I got my C3 a year ago an the gun was abused and beated to death, if you remember the pics, the riffe logo was even washed out, even though the gun and the trigg mech are still in tip top condition. The gun is a friggin´laser

  • There are a lot of things about the RA I would change if I could.
    1. Change the trigger mech to SS as mentioned
    2. Have an adjustable trigger
    3. Change the safety to one that worked
    4. Change the line release to a side release
    5. Change the muzzle to allow for an optional screw in kill spike
    6. Have a choice of camo colors [blue water or reef] for the alum barrel, muzzle and grip section
There is more changes but these are the major ones to me
    This is just my opinion

    sorry for the derail

  • Yes I pay! Family discount :) really I have a 120 Super Venom and a 100 Venom next comes King Venom but my family discount on that gun isn't so good. Other guns are a 45" Hybrid Wong, 55" Hybird Wong, just sold 2 50" closed track guns.

Me aswell, we were all scrounging the small reef for bugs. We were marking bug holes by shooting the shaft into sand next to the hole since the vis was bad. I heard the gun go off and there it was not more than 5ft away from me a shaft in soild rock. Vis was bad and I figured Hector really wanted to mark the spot because he saw a lobster. When I heard it misfired I was freaked out.

That is some scary shit man, that is probably my greatest fear in the World. One of my mates carries a huge homemade speargun loaded with 5 bands and just an undersee mech, that was intended for just one or two bands. Heck and he insists that the mech will hold up, i stay as far as I can off the spear tip!! :0

  • I know why some people like the RA. But prices in this market are defining what we use more often. RA got their prices down so they are selling good. Where can you get a good speargun in good price that all the parts will be high quality?, i dont know one. If you want good quality you might have to build it yourself, or bust the wallet for a good gun. I dont know about some of you guys, but there is something about the railguns that i dont like. I will always prefer wood over pipes. But that is just me. I know they are good guns. But like everything in this sport is just personal choice for everything. I see people talking in diffrerent forums about different brands in railguns. For me 500$+ for a pipe is just wacked. 200$ is more likely . Anyways is almost like most of the guns are made very similar and the price difference is outrageous.

  • As experienced spearfishermen, whether we like a speargun or not is about personal preferences/little details that make it easy/enjoyable to use. It's taken for granted that the basic functionality is there, as in keeping the spear in the speargun until you press the trigger. A trigger mechanism is not a component where a speargun manufacturer should lower production costs at the expense of safety. Or make a design mistake because of ignorance.

  • Going back to the Rob Allen , finally I got mine, and quickly I opened the trigger to see which one was the so mentioned problem regarding the plastic trigger, but SORPRISE! The most important piece; the one that makes the real function of holding the shaft is in METAL!! The housing of the trigger is in plastic, but it doesn’t matter the function is to hold the pieces together and it doesn’t make any type of pressure. Fore instance my personal opinion is that I don’t see any type of problem in regard to the trigger, it works for me!!

  • Some people mention too that it wasn’t easy to loaded because it doesn’t have a butt end, but when I used it I didn’t found any trouble with that, But anyway I got some extra time this week to figure out a way to make it easier, so I’m showing here a good idea on what to do to solve this issue. I bought online a butt end and adapted to the gun. It’s easy to do just make a hole in the back and another one for the pin(check the pics).
