What kinda fish did I spear?

  • I wanna know one thing, did the cubera bend the RA shaft? :)

It looks too big for you to be holding it up like that.

I always thought cobias and remoras are similar. It occurred to me that young cobias are remoras but this is just a guess. The fact that cobias follow sharks would go along with that idea. Cobias even have that flat spot on the top of their head where the remora has its suction spot.

Did you notice my facial expression?

Yes the spear bent. It did not get bent it in open water.

  • Awesome fish, Harry, you are killing them. If I didn't go diving today on a tropical island, I'd be jealous. Next week, I'm hoping to have some decent size Dogtooth Tuna.

For now, I have an Uku and only had 80 feet of vis. My deep diving should be up to snuff when I come to MIA in two weeks.

  • holy shit!!! harry and Jim just both skyrocketed on the prick list....

nice fish Harry and Jim, diving in those conditions would allow even a scrub like me to hit 80..you should be doing 2 minute drops :)

    i like to spear fish

  • Prick list indeed. But still very cool fish greek. Now I feel stupid for not contacting you to try and go.

  • Great fish Harry! That big grin on your face with the cubera says it all. :toast2:

It's not really a big grin. It's more of a "hurry the ~`~`~`~` up and take the picture face". ;)

  • I am pretty sure the second fish is a cobia. A remora has a patch of "flaps" on top of its head. This creates a type of suction used to hold it next to bigger fish. The remora can effertlessly stay with the larger fish and gobble up the scraps. It doesn't appear that your fish has that patch?

  • The viz was really poor. I was dropping down on a deep wreck, and I was lucky to find it. I saw a big fish moving below me, and I was close enough for a shot, but I wanted to be sure what it was. The fish started to move away out of range then turned abruptly and came a little closer. I think I landed at his front door, and I was in the way. I took my shot, and I hurt the fish bad. My dyneema got caught on the wreck and was preventing the fish to enter into the wreck. Juan, who was driving the boat at the time, handed me my 2nd gun and my float to clip my main reel gun. Davie was on the surface helping me while i was diving down to retrieve the fish.

  • ahhh, is it ocean carp? just kidding dude, nice fish how much did the cubera weigh?

i didn't weigh it. I don't know. It was heavy as hell. The cobia was about 50lbs. Id say that fish was at least 70lbs on the very conservative side.

That fish looks to be at least that, great fish Harry :thumbsup2: I like the stoked look on your face.

  • where are Davie's fish??? or did he not fare so well ? :)

Davie shot 2 big Ajs but no pictures. I watched Davie go across the top of the water like he was body surfing. haha
