TOBAGO, visit from TRINIDAD
-
-
hi,
finally michael made it across here from tobagos big sister island tinidad, and came for a dive.
i used to spearfish now and then with his big son, brian, at the oilrigs on trinidads eastcoast for some years, so it was a pleasure to show "the old man" some of the marine life in tobagos water.
he normally dives in trinidads green low vis waters, so even we didnt had the cleanest water at our dive,
30-40ft, for him that was very good vis. after fighting a bit with seasickness, he manage to pick up a nice 12pound hoggie, and shot his first washaroo(rainbowparrot), amongst some barras, jacks, etc.
great diving,great fun, full cooler.
looking forward for the next visit. -
A long day, you got back after dark?
Beautiful hog.

we didnt leave too early that day, but came in after sunset. i like to hunt the hour around sunset,
just before it gets dark. -
That was my favorite time as well diving in Cuba, even if just for a couple of hours. But only because of my lazy nature. I don't like to wake up early, and the urge to dive kicks in strong when the heat of the day starts. Still it seemed to me that there was good fish to be had at that time. Of course for the spearo who sells his catch this doesn't work well, as there's much to do after getting back.

nice!!

btw,
i thought i should share some pics of some of michaels equipment. just recently i realized that i miss the great opportunity for years to take pictures of all the local divers and some of their amazingly created and modified equipment. it always was, and still is very hard to get spearfishing equipment here, and for lots of the local divers who spearfish for food and/or a living its often not affordable.
weightbelt cut out of a rubbermat,
as a cyclist i specially liked the rubberpatches on his fins.
his home build gun came out a bit heavy, but does the work.
the fiverglass work on the mask holds up very well. -

thank you for sharing that man, that is great...I love DIY, ingenuity and creative problem solving, and that is the purest example of all three:D

I love to see this kind of work, it reminds me of Cuba where I started spearfishing. For a long time I wanted to do a big writeup with pics about all the creative things they do in Cuba to be able to dive. Thanks for sharing tinu.
The patches on the fin remind me of the Cuban repair shops where they fix punctured car tire inner tubes. They use a hot plate salvaged from an electric iron to bond the patch.
I'm interested in the mask/last pic. If you can tell me what brand it is.

hi dan,
all i know is that the mask was cheap, for down here. about 32.-us. i will try to ask him about the brand. -
Looks similar to a Cressi Bigeye?
I love ghetto gear. Ingenuity (especially with such limited resources) always commands a high level of respect in my eyes. :thumbsup2:
