Giving away spearfishing locations

  • Providing spearfishing locations AKA spots IS NOT the purpose of Spearfishing World forum. Our members freely share information about spearfishing equipment, diving techniques, hunting techniques, spearfishing regulations, and many other things, but should keep their spots to themselves. Knowing where to dive is the part of spearfishing where everyone has to pay their dues, going out and finding spots by themselves, or contributing to the forum for a while and making friends who will then invite you to their spots. Simply being a member here for a few days is not any reason to be given spearfishing locations.

New members may ask for locations this way: I want to go spearfishing out of ***** where can I go? Or, I read that there there are reef lines when diving from ***** how long of a swim is it to first one? In response to such questions the member should be politely directed to this post.

Some of you may think this is a harsh policy. Then perhaps you haven't seen depleted sea areas. Being a public forum anyone can read the posts. Do you want to continue getting fish from your spots? Then support the forum's policy of not giving out information about specific spearfishing locations online. Being a member puts you under no obligation to share this information with another member, never mind the thousands of people you don't know about who will read your posts. If you feel you really want to share a location with a person you hardly know, why not do it in a pm? Maybe you think that it doesn't matter because everybody already knows about a certain area, or maybe you know it's dead and don't even dive there any more, how do you think it got that way?

  • Thanks! I could not agree more with your philosophy on posting locations. I usually use fictitious or very general locations in my reports and videos. For example: "ship rock pier", "Malibu Break Wall"," Pacific Coast" etc.. There is nothing worse then having some asshat post a report on a local fishing hole. The other site is patrolled by enviros, DFG, poachers and lazy lurkers. I like the way you are structuring the site to build in some protection.

    Thanks!

  • Feel the same way, that's something you gotta earn. But don't get me wrong I would take a newbie to a good spot so they don't get discouraged, also there some spots that I would share if someone show me another good spot, or if we go to someone's spot and it's not producing. But in the end there are some real good spots that I would only fish with some real close friends to try and keep minimun pressure from others.:)

  • I agree 100% Dan.... Now Ask Mike where he got all those Hallibut.:D:D
I suck at Flaties they never swim out in the Blue.

  • On my boat if a ever bring a guest, I take them to the secrets I dive at offshore islands.I tell them they are
welcome to dive my spots but do not bring a boat load of guys there. If they F-up I never invite them back.

  • I don't mind exchanging numbers with other spearos or taking people to the few numbers I have. Making reference to a general diving area like "Dania Beach" doesn't describe a particular dive spot so if I can give someone a hint towards which way he/she should swim I would. I remember how hard it was for me to find "ok" spots but I don't own the spots and I am aware there are other people that dive there so its no big deal. Fish move anyways, its not like they stay in one spot regardless of how good it is. That is why we have to check a bunch of spots when we go spearing, otherwise we could just go to our best/most productive spot limit out and head home. Like I said before I don't mind sharing spots but I do choose who I share them with.

    LOL
    Don,
I share spots with people the understand the "code". If they F'up I won't dive with them again. More often then not I dive solo.

  • Making reference to a general diving area like "Dania Beach" doesn't describe a particular dive spot so if I can give someone a hint towards which way he/she should swim I would.

Are you sure you want to do that on a public forum where anyone can read it? Wouldn't it be better to do it in a pm? I'm sure Dania used to be productive at some point, it's a desert now.

  • I have given many points out in my years of diving. However, there are some very specific ones that I would not give to even my mother. Usually if I can gauge the person asking as a quality individual that will both appreciate and perhaps reciprocate the favor one day, I don't mind giving them actual points. Sometimes, these can be a general area, which is just as good because fish move and it can save someone alot of time particularly diving a new area. I gave some of my qualilty Miami points to a few guys once I moved north, but these were just a few divers I knew well. I have some points in Miami that usually produced limits of blacks that even less than a year ago were still producing, these I doubt I'll ever give away even if I'm not diving that area as often. I have given many points in the Keys and all the way up the east and west coast to a few divers I respect and like.

  • If I found good spots I would not give out there location unless the person receiving them has my respect and then ask them to heed the "code" as well. Saying like I did on the other section that we dove off of Commercial beach blvd does nothing in my opinion, especially when there is no secret spot out there to talk about, but if it were a great location it would not have been mentioned, only a "we dove Ft Lauderdale today" type thing.

  • thanks for the thread Dan...i think the best thing to to not give any specific locations in threads...if someone wants to share a spot, go PM...that way there is no real problem

    i like to spear fish

  • I agree with the idea of not giving away spots. Most spots I dive were the result of educated guesses and the rest from a network of friends who trusted me to keep them quiet.

One way in which these boards are valuable to me is to determine the the conditions of an already known dive location (visibility / divability). I live an hours drive from my nearest locations so this helps me better assess whether I should mow the lawn or dive. It can also save me considerable gas $. I also am willing to share the same info without giving up a specific location or fish / catch specifics.

    How does that mesh?
