neck weights

  • There was no section in the gear forum for weights so I posted this here,
My wife is pretty handy with a needle and thread. I had an old BCD laying around so we cut out the cumber bun and sewed it back with lead inside. Cut the clips off and sewed them in.

One is 3.5 and the other 3 lbs. Very comfortable. I was going to try inner tube but Chela said "bullsheet, hard to sew". So she did this.
And the weather is supposed to suck again this weekend. Maybe I'll get her to make some more gear. :D

    Nice work.

But neck weights are weird. If you want better weight distribution for improved posture or relief from back pain, I recommend you try the weight vest. The first step to get rid of back pain BTW is to use a rubber weight belt with many small weights evenly distributed, and wear the belt low on the hips.

  • That definitely looks like an improvement. You're right about neck weights. At first it feels pretty confining. But after a while I don't notice it.
Do you have special leads for that or do you use shot?

  • Shot is less compact than solid weights so I don't use it. I don't have special weights for this vest, my 1.25lb rectangular belt weights fit fine in the pockets. If the weight is shaped for the vest pocket each pocket will take more than 1.25lb.

  • you get used to the neck weight and don't notice it. I t really helps to get you down on the descent . I use the cheapo old inner tube -free from the bike store and wrapped in electrical tape. I wear about 7 lbs depending on the suit and buoyancy. I wear a weight belt too if I have on a 5mm.

  • hank--she did a nice sewing job sir:toast:

30years ago I started using neck weights when freedive/spearfishing. I went about building the necklace a little different. I took lead fishing "egg" weights and ran a length of heavy weight dynemia through the egg weights and permanently tie the ends. I make the necklace big enough that it slips over my head and requires no mechanical release that can fail. You can use different size "egg" weights to achieve ones desired weight very easily. This construction also does not restrict ones neck movement or breathing. At the end of the day I just run my weight belt through the necklace and all my weights are kept together. This type of construction is good also because it dries quick, unlike fabric.
Sdeisen, Lunkerbuster, scott rapp, nate and others have seen this necklace.
    Hope this helps

Don Paul--I'd like to get my hands on her necklace sir :bed:

, I recommend you try this minimalist weight vest. The first step to get rid of back pain BTW is to use a rubber weight belt with many small weights evenly distributed, and wear the belt low on the hips.

Hey Dan, The site says you're out of stock on the camo vests. Any idea when you'll have more?
