That's quite a story KC.
I had 2 guys from work with me on the boat hook and line fishing. They saw the ray come out of the water and assumed that I had shot it. They kept saying "you must have missed the cobia and hit the ray"
I got mad and came in.

I think you were close enough for that fish. You do not need to get closer on spooky fish like Cubera. Another foot closer and you could have spooked that fish. The shot was downward and your gun has lots of power that way. Recessed flopper on a 7.5 - 8mm spear still has lots of steel.
What size gun do you have?
140 x 7mm shaft does not have that much weight. It is not a problem for muttons, but i think it is too light for Cuberas.
That shot looked no further than 12ft from speartip. I am pretty good at judging it with all the video editing I do.
Marco- I am still thinking about the Mutton that the shark ate.... I bet this will stick with you for a while! LOL. Man, I love spearfishing!
The fish survived, it´s a fact. I have seen quite a few of smaller pargos with huge spear scars in their heads.
Pargos have small brains and big balls!
