Mares Snake knife review

  • To my eye the Mares Snake knife has a retro look and feel, and I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. If I didn't like my Speardiver Skene Spearfishing Knife so much for its low profile I would surely be using the Mares Snake. Here are some key features I found worth pointing out:

    • One of the best features of this knife is that the butt end unscrews allowing quick and easy disassembly for thorough cleaning and oiling of the knife. After the butt is tightened down the knife is very solid with no shifting inside the sheath.
    • The ergonomic handle has a rubbery texture and feels secure in the hand.
    • High visibility polished stainless steel blade with a serrated edge to cut mono, cable, or fish.
    • The blade is very stiff, it can be used to chip away rock to retrieve a stuck shaft.
    • The knife is secured in the sheath ready for quick release with a built in clip, that grabs the handle just below the butt with a pincer action. A rubber loop that goes over the end of the handle offers additional security. Overall a surprisingly simple and secure system
    • Sheath can be calf, thigh, or belt mounted.

  • This used to be the old Sporasub Snake, when Sporasub was Made in France and good quality. If I'm not wrong, the round knob that unscrews from the bottom of the blade is made out of zinc and it is a cathode for corrosion protection. That was a nice feature back in the days.
However this knife is kind of big for my taste, but used to have many, many lovers. :)

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

  • Sporasub was owned by Mares, then omer, now Aqua Lung. The Mares Snake is larger than the current trend in spearfishing knives, but it is still good quality. Box label says made in Bulgaria. The styling is similar to the Beuchat Mundial and Esclapez Dagger knives.

  • I like the knife a lot, and the retro look is right up my alley of taste.

The Case is what is real important, the dual catch looks solid. and picture posted above is great.

Wife would kill me if I bought another dive knife, I got a drawer full of them.

A new thread with just dive knives might be interesting. I'm sure I'm not the only one with lots of knives.

  • I too had the first green handle one many years ago, the handle was med soft and had a almost sticky feel . Make sure to remember it's length when delivering a Coup de grace to the top of the scull on fish smaller then 50 lbs....
I didn't once and found out how easy that sharp double penetrates a gloved wet hand.:@
Great knife though for sure, held a edge very well.

    Cheers, Don
