Lost one at Crystal Cove, Ca today

  • My brother went out for a few hours today, and when he was getting in the water he found out the news that a fellow spearfisher blacked out under water. As of right now it sounds like he got stuck in kelp paddies and couldn't get out. He was diving with a buddy, but they lost sight of each other.

This really just re-emphasized the importance of making sure you and your buddy are constantly together. Nobody wants to hear news like this and it definently isn't something to be taken lightly. So Please dive with a buddy and stick together!
    Please dive safely out there!

  • Update from same above source:
A man who drowned while freediving at Crystal Cove State Park on Saturday has been identified as Wesley Kim, a 27-year-old man from the Reseda neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Kim and another man in his 20s were diving without scuba gear about 400 yards from shore, to depths of 45 feet, when Kim disappeared at about 1:30 p.m., California State Parks spokesman Kevin Pearsall said.

Lifeguards found Kim’s body at about 3 p.m.; he was pronounced dead at 3:32 p.m. at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach. The Coroner’s Office announced his identity Sunday.

Pearsall said Kim and his companion appeared to be experienced at diving without scuba equipment because they were able to reach such depths. They were at Scotchman’s Cove, a popular diving spot, when Kim drowned.

  • We have lost so many the past couple of years. I cringe when I read a title indicating we lost anther one diver.

    Dive safe.

  • So sorry to hear. It's been a bad year for drownings off the Northern California Coast, has to be around 10 so far. Try not to keep score.

Not something you get used to, but expected at times.

Non Local divers here for the 1st time, seek out information from local divers, Plenty around who are very helpful.

  • Linghunt, are those both on the hose and free?

    Thanks, Don

Free mostly, Ab diving where no scuba is allowed for the take. They lost 3 at one time earlier, 1 got rescued out of the water and 5th member didn't get in. Out of town group from East coast I recall.

Might have been one scuba this year or last year.

When I see the rescue chopper buzzing over my house headed West, usually trouble.
