Hello all,
My name is Daniel and live in East Texas. I'm very new to spearfishing and freediving, but I cannot wait to go again. My experience is limited to two weeklong trips to Abaco with slings and polespears in depths of 10-35 feet. I took sailing lessons, and now I charter a sailboat out of Marsh Harbor and take 5-7 friends with me. We live on board and eat Mountain House when we don't catch fish - keeps the trip to $1,200ish per person (including airfare). I plan to take 2 trips per summer starting next year. I handle all the travel plans, equipment, budget, food and planning - so as captain and travel agent, I managed to go for free this year!
This year, we found some great spots, but because of our inexperience didn't bag anything more than 14 inches (mostly Grunts and Yellow Tail Snapper). Who knew that 6 newbs thrashing around would scare away all the big fish... fish that probably grew big by avoiding predators much worthier than we.
I won't be travelling to the Bahamas again this summer, but I am aching to go spearfishing, so I was considering Florida, Alabama?, or California. I've even tried searching for freshwater locations. I have a couple weeks of vacation left. Any recommendations for a beginner?
