Always say wild animal is wild animal, hell you dont even need a wild animal! people project human emotions and feelings on dogs then are surprised when they behave less than cuddly!! Knowing a animal, any animals behavior is critical to harmonious encounters. I dont think that man was coming off airy-fairy at all, I agree with him 100%, just think its mad to go looking for the king of the jungle when you dont have to ...Seen friends bitten by dolphins and i laughed my ass off :krezy: at them afterwards as I said to them wild animal with teeth who are apex predators you dont provoke by swimming up to them without a care in the world going " here flipper flipper" it is asking for some well earned teeth marks!! :shark4: hahahahahahahahahaahaha..But the average man in the street thinks that the only good shark is a dead shark and we all know better than that, we are lucky to be in the wild and as such have a rare insight to the real nature of the wild animal, no?

Lunker, I had a Spearo buddy from Trinidad teach me a great technique for dealing with the aggressive bulls as they used to have there way with me before, go straight at them while chanting in your mind "fry shark, bake shark, stew shark, curry shark" hahahahahahahahah worked like a charm :D

The majority of sharks will leave when you act at all aggressive. Remember that we appear huge with all our gear on. Some sharks will leave and come right back which is unnerving

When a sharks back is arched and pec fins are down, I am out of the water or out of the area.

Have run into Hammers, Mako, Tigers, Lemons and a lot of bad times with bulls...Bulls were the only ones i remember arching or hunching, was always bad times when they started hunching and more often than not took our bag full of fish...scuba spearing,110 ft top deck of Bianca C, its a cruise ship wreck in Grenada(another Costa cruise ship disaster) we would bag the fish on the deck to keep the teeth away from us, was a pack of three bulls we named Peter, Paul and Mary that had laid claim to that area..But the fishing was 2 damn good to leave well enough alone
Its so cool to listen to all the advice given here as its all what i have seen and learned BUT you never know with a wild animal what it will do.. Had a Tiger in Barbuda shake the damn boat by the engine foot!! hahahahahahahaahahahahahahah..we still went in ;)

Fellow spear diver members i have been trolling every post i can get my hands on, mind boggling the amount of info freely given and available here from insanely talented masters and ordinary spear folk alike, the friendships and support offered with humor and encouragement leaves me speechless.(yes he does go on!! :boring1:) :D but seriously :notworthy1::notworthy1:
Short silence is all i can manage ... As a tropical island boy i started as a free diver very young with single band cavalero guns and as i discovered broads, cigs and booze decided that a tank was way less demanding on a corrupt mind and over taxed body :toast:, now at 43 (smoke free) i am back in the water free diving again and loving it, trying to eek together a bluewater gun to go dive the great blue as that is where i am most at home and most afraid to dive (Blue water sailor since i was a teenager)... So a challenge and a fear to overcome is my idea of a great time :blahblah2:
Not worried by fish and mammals alike in the blue, got tons of time with them spearing in hundred plus water, even bullied and attacked a few times by the more toothy kind, no big ting man ... Its the no bottom thing and no perception of depth, once while delivering a boat across the pond my crew and I were becalmed for days, in a fit of boredom i took a disposable clicker and went down way past its crush depth with a crew member and looked up and took a picture, it was thrilling to be encapsulated in this blue clear water and at 50 or so feet see no bottom and up there was this 51 foot sailing boat looking like a tiny bath tub toy from the deep Atlantic bottom perspective, scared the crap out of me actually!! :wuss:
As a settled man for the first time in 20 plus years, been to busy sailing around the blue marble ;) I am going to try out the blue from a new angle so if i bug you please be patient, I feel like a kid at Christmas :thumbsup1:

Never thought about the snorkel being dangerous that way, cheers for that insight :snorkle2:

:idea2: there is a great technique that i use to clear snorkel on last few feet before surface so that i break surface with a empty tube(if you insist on a tube in mouth). Simply on the last few feet before the surface tilt head back with snorkel in mouth and even a gentle hummmmm will displace the water there so when you get to surface it is clear and a clean breath can be had, slow calm breaths are important on surface right after surfacing from a deep dive as you can cause a blackout on the surface with animated movement or hyper breathing...but it is easier to not have a snorkel in ;)

dan- the snorkel in the mouth is dangerous because it will over come your bodies natural drowning defense which closes you throat until your terminal gasp---the snorkel opens your jaw and thus allows the water to push down your soft pallate and flood the lungs.

[edit]- just saw that you added an answer

Found this string from pro machinist...
"I went to my local plastic supplier for Delrin, told them what it was for, and they recommended UHMW. I was warned that it is a little more difficult to machine than Delrin but that it would last longer and have less friction.

    This website seems to agree:
Page not found- Johnson Plastics & Supply- Evansville, IN

"UHMW has one of the highest impact strengths of any thermoplastic and has excellent abrasion resistance, tensile strength, energy absorption, resistance to stress, cracking, and coefficient of friction properties. UHMW coefficient of friction is significantly better than nylon and acetal and is virtually the same as Teflon® but has superior abrasion resistance.

UHMW in sliding applications will out wear steel 10 to 1 and stainless steel 6 to 1."

BTW, acetal is the generic name for Delrin.

I see that there is now Delrin AF, which has threads of Teflon added. Based on the quote above, however, I'm sticking with UHMW for now.

Also, UHMW cost me $3 a pound versus regular Delrin for $8 a pound."

Also this is the BOMB :DComparison Table for Plastics.
It is a string about best track materials after all

Ben for sure, over fished by Grand Anse sadly but there are some good spots off Point Salines(airport) and great fishing at the Bianca C wreak but much better diving off the north end of the island. Message me your number and will give you a call when i get down there this month...What brings you to the Spice island?

How do prepare Lion fish? we here in the Windwards and Leewards are just seeing the tip of the iceberg...As a charter boat captain I am a stakeholder and will be affected by the invasion, if i can get the word out to the local spearos and fishermen on how to saftly kill and eat um it will be a great start to keeping the coming flood in control... We have confirmed Lions in St Vincent since begining of this year

At the moment in St Vincent for a month but I am from Grenada and live in Antigua Marco, in Grenada we hit some sea mounts off the north end of the island and usually end up with a boat full of the same species i see on your profile pic, where was that shot taken?
