Thanks Marco! Funny you say that, it did had squids, used it as chum. I do have some more footage just need to organize it.
For regular people is warm already, I just get cold easily. 72F is cold for me. With the 1.5mm I start shivering after 45 mins in the water, now it doesn't happen. If it gets too warm with the 3mm I just flush it.
Display MoreNice video! AP is one of my favorites as well. But I don't deep fry them. Just a little bit of salt and pepper and grill it in a pan with some olive oil. It's all it needs.
Did you see what was in the stomach? Almost always is squid!
Now, I hope it doesn't gets one more year until your next post....
One question: It is not too warm right now for a 3 mm wetsuit in PR? I remember using mine just for 3-4 months. The rest of the year I used a worn off wetsuit or just a full lycra suit.
Awesome African Pompano!
They're one of my favorite fish to eat! Firm, white, tasty meat!
Thank you! Couldn't believe how good they taste, great meat for nuggets.
I wish you would post more! Spaghetti Western theme music, awesome. Really enjoy your hunting bruddah! So line tangled, meaning no line played out? so you had to swim like elma fud after a bunny rabbit [emoji1]
Great knife work at the end.
Thanks George! hahahaha that's Hans Zimmer music from Lone Ranger. Yes it was a hectic moment, for a couple of minutes I thought I lost the gun. I already changed the wishbones setup and now it doesn't tangle. Long swim back to shore, but well worth it. I stabbed the fish to gain some control on him, that calmed him a bit
My bad! I apologize. Thought it was as a current post. Let me make it up to you. Take a day trip to Culebra and We'll go out to the reefs off Culebrita.
No worries! I was supposed to be there this week, but we agreed to postpone the trip for June, when muttons season is open. I'll let you know when I'm there, thanks!
Another cool video! Nice looking fish.
Thanks Billy!
Cool
Thanks!
You may want to be careful posting pics of mutton snappers as the season here in PR is closed. April 1 till May 31
This is why I don't post that much. Before you make an assumption like this one, verify the date! That mutton was shot on August of 2014...
I do follow all the law, rules and regulations of my island, but thanks for your concern. Espero que seas puertoriqueño y no alguien que viene de afuera, a decirme que hacer en mi propia isla...
Hi guys!
After spending a lot of time looking for them, I finally shot an African Pompano. Used a nice chum with crushed lobster heads and some cero mack guts. I was looking for the usual dog snapper when the AP showed up. Didn't had the camera recording since I was breathing up.
Shot it, and the bands tangled on the shooting line. The fish swam offshore while I was in pursuit of my gun. It was a horrible shot placement so I played him nicely. Fish only weighted 14.7 lbs.

I'm now using the Speardiver Predator suit and can't be more happy with my purchase. Perfect fit, super comfy, and a great quality. Thanks Dan!
If it fits you its a great mask! Mine is almost 3 yrs old, the strap broke fairly quick, other than that is the best mask I have tried ( for me).
Great explanation, and I think in a skill based art form as well. But if the mass is needed on your pipe guns then why not stick to an aluminum gun in the first place, why the exotic materials? Again remember I have almost zero experience with pipe guns, so excuse me if my questions are simple minded [emoji26]
George I wish you could try them and experience the difference. My favorite gun is a Super 130 with a 7.5mm shaft. I own 3 Aimrites, 2 carbons and 1 aluminum. The aluminum sounds like a pellet rifle when shot and floats vertical without the shaft, the carbon floats horizontal. Plus the swivel makes a lot of noise when it hits the aluminum. It stills kills fish like a champ but when you have used both, you will understand why some people prefer carbon pipe guns.
That's a nice yellow tail snapper. Those are really smart fish and know how to stay just out of range here. I've only shot a couple....ever. Really good eating.
Same here!
Now, seriously, I dive much more relaxed in Venezuela where I know there are no sharks than I used to dive in Puerto Rico. And even in pr, I tried to avoid the most "sharky" areas. I was a constant fight to prevent them from stealing your catch.
I know that they belong to the sea and we don't and blah blah blah, but that's my opinion.
I don't mind if you are going to eat them and don't abuse the resource in terms of amount. I actually helped a commercial fisherman to load a large tiger in his boat. He caught it less than 100ft from were I was diving. I tried to convince him to release it and get another species since tigers are not that common, but he told me he needed the income.
Its their home, I'm just a visitor.
Display MoreMaybe... This picture of a different thumper. You will have to file a groove around the shaft so the clip can "snap" in place. if you get it too deep, you will not be able to get the head off.
This is the same concept around the typical swivels we all use. Those just have a deep groove so when assembled it will not come apart.
For this one, just a light radius.
The TriCut can't hit the bottom of the drilled hole without damaging sharpness, you can see the mark on the pencil point. Might have to stuff a softer material in the hole so the tricut can bottom out without damage. hummm, maybe some Aluminum or a softer Delrin. Delrin will wear at a faster rate and cause the head to be more sloppy on the shaft. Probably not an issue for this application. I could form the aluminum with a tricut tip by hammering it in there to provide grooves. Need to think about it.
Note: I had a nice fit on this cap, (oxide wear from taking it on and off playing with it. better shaft diameter better fit you will have.
I could make something up. I'm about a solid week behind on orders right now. Drop me a line.
That sounds great! I think the Delrin would be destroyed on the first shot. I will try to use a socket from a tool kit and see if it works. My main concern would be if it gets stuck, re-sharpening the shaft wouldn't be a problem. Thanks John!

Great derail, please derail with some more details of the shark encounter! Are you allowed to keep and eat it?
George,
As far as I know, we are allowed to shoot it, keep it and eat it. I just prefer to watch them. A friend likes to harvest them since he eats them; pinchos de tiburon. The only shark species not allowed is the Nurse Shark.
We were in the 10ft. of water looking for lobster when I heard my dive partner screaming. I had the fish stringer right next to me and there was a very curious reef shark taking a close look at it. As soon as the shark saw my aggressive behavior towards him, he started to swim away and I fired a "warning shot" putting the shaft a couple of inches away from his body; thinking it would scare him.
We kept swimming and I was protecting the stringer since I knew it could come back. A couple of minutes later and the a-hole was right next to me. Fins down, and ready to bite. He took 4/5 of the fish in the stringer, and spit them as soon as he bit them. Usually they take one and leave. All this time I was trying to push the shark away with my gun while he was very aggressive. It reminded me of a dog fight. When he was going for the last fish in the stringer, I got very close (mistake) and pushed him with the gun as hard as I could. The tip punctured his skin. He didn't like it and came at me opening and closing the jaws. In those split seconds I thought he was going to bit a piece of me and spit it right back. I fired the gun shot gun style when he was 2-3 feet away from me.
Right after that my partner was by my side asking if I was ok and why I took so long to shoot it/defend myself. I didn't want to kill it.
I put too much pressure on the line during the fight and the crimp failed, so we were not able to get him. The stringer looked very funny, only fish heads. After that day, if I see a shark and I already have fish with me, I swim back to shore.
This was a couple of days later.
That friend calls me the shark magnet
Gracias Macario, George y Marco! Marco if you ever visit the island again let me know, I would like to dive with you.
Thanks George!
HAHAHAHA John, that looks great!! Could you make something that work with tricut tips (Rob Allens shafts)? I had to pull the plug on a reef shark a couple of months ago after he tried to bit me :nono:. If I had something like this he would still be swimming.
Edit: sorry for the derail George
Those jack crevalle fights are awesome, I personally don't eat them but my partner does.
What is that tip? I'm looking for something like that to blast the sharks without hurting/puncturing them.
Nice shot Marco!
Ok it's the tapatalk app I'm using to view the forum. Works when I go threw web site.on tapatalk I get a video of two teens walking down a street in Europe some where.
Cool video. Good shooting!
hahaha ok, I was wondering what was going on. Thanks man!
Thanks guys! Hopefully I can dive this weekend and I'll come back with a dive report.
Luis
I wanted to dive this full moon but my dive partner had to work so I went alone. There was a lot of bait! Ended up with a nice ocean trigger, a cero mack, a small dog, and a hog. Both the trigger and hog are not common to find them on a shore dive, at least for me. I did shot a cubera, but the lower jaw broke and and it teared off Spent the next hour looking for it under a rock with only one band loaded, and suddenly a nice dog appeared out of nowhere. Didn't pull the trigger since I was not too confident in the shot with only one band. Never saw those two snapper again. Either way it was a productive dive.
here's a video

That's some quality fish right there! Congrats! Looking forward for the next update Hank.
Like Dan said, experience is everything. You can't buy it. Clear your head of negative thoughts, I don't like to dive in murky water because I can't stop thinking about my previous shark close calls.
I just enjoy my surroundings while my body is completely relaxed. These videos helped me since I never had someone to teach me how to freedive/spearfish. Watch the videos of Giorgio Dapiran like this one.
