Don you are absolutely right about the lighter, faster shaft not hitting as hard as your 5/16 shaft. It works the same with bullets, as a bullet weighing 77 grains traveling at 2500 fps is going to penetrate deeper than say a 55 grain bullet traveling at 3000 fps.

I incorporated this into my spearguns, as I was not getting quite as much penetration as I needed with the factory shaft. While it was fast, it didn't have the kinetic energy and weight to penetrate a big catfish's hard skull at much beyond 5'. When I installed a heavier shaft, immediately the penetration went way up, despite losing a little velocity, and had no problem piercing skulls after that.

I hunt Beaver Lake since I live close and have a dock/boats there, which is a couple hours west of Bull Shoals; I would like to take a trip there sometime this summer to see how it compares.

Awesome, that's what I was hoping to hear. I used to dive in Washington a lot with water temps from 44-48 degrees, but only had a 7mm scuba suit and had to wear a shortie over it in order to stay in for several hours. I am pumped to try out the Speardiver suit here in a week or two. Can you guys recommend a good pair of 7mm booties and gloves?

As a few of you may know I am new here and have not gotten serious about spearfishing until recently. I just ordered a 5mm and 7mm Speardiver wetsuit because the lakes I dive in can be in the low 40s for a good part of the year. The thing is the vis in the winter can be up to 25 ft, whereas in the summer it can be as little as 4 ft at times. Thus, winter diving has its appeal for spearfishing. For any of you who have experience with these suits in cold water, will the 7mm be plenty for 40 degree waters? Thanks for any input.

    Hello All,

I've been spearfishing for about 10 years now, but am just now beginning to get really serious about it. I have an interesting situation, as I am completely landlocked and can only hunt in freshwater lakes nearby. I used to live in Washington state for a few years and got to enjoy spearing in the Pacific NW, and some in Florida Keys. However, I now reside in Arkansas and only have lakes to dive in. I am coming on board with the hopes of learning how to improve my spearfishing skills and enjoying the conversations. Thanks
