I clamped the blank vertically to my drill press, made sure it was level, then used a 1" hole saw to cut the mortise. I cut 1" deep then backed the whole saw out and removed the remaining wood with chisels and a 1" spade bit. Once clear I made another 1" deep cut with the hole saw and cleared the remaining wood. The final depth of the mortise is 2".

    Hey all,
Working on building my second gun. This one will end up being an 80 cm gun with a Salvimar voodoo euro handle attached. Blank is a 3 laminate mahogany. I still have some rounding to do around the band slot and final sanding to taper the blank to the handle, bu as you can see near the handle the wood is thin and has cracked slightly. I will fill the joint between the handle and stock with epoxy and also purchased some carbon/kevlar fabric. I would like to do at least a partial wrap near the handle to reinforce the joint with the carbon/kevlar. Anybody have any advice on how to make a nice transition from the fabric to the wood? This blank was originally 48" but developed a significant bow after I cut the track and shaped it. So I cut the blank down to the current dimensions to salvage the gun and I needed a dirty water/hole gun anyways. I have enough fabric to wrap the entire gun but am hesitant to do so since I have little to no experience in wrapping with carbon/kevlar.
    Thanks.

I would call it a rear handle + as well as a very nice first build! :thumbsup2: Nice clean lines. I can't see it very well, but is the handle frame recessed into the wood? If not, you might want to consider doing that. Two 3/4" bands is enough power to be a concern if you're depending just on the mounting screws to handle the recoil forces against the handle.

Well coming from you that is a great compliment indeed. I did recess the handle, however I did not recess it quite far enough and a small lip of metal extends beyond the bottom of the blank. You can see it a little in the picture. Most of th handle frame is recessed though.

Cool build :cool2: ummm isn't that a rear handle not a rear plus? I am learning all the variations myself and have no shame asking stupid questions or making ridiculous observations...lol...

Well now I'm confused, lol. I thought a tear handle was where the handle and mech are at the butt. Since this gun has a short butt I called it a rear handle +. But then again I am very new to this and am probably wrong

    Hey guys,
Here is my first gun build. I just recently got into spearfishing and have been borrowing a friends speargun for the last few months. I like to build stuff, so I knew right away that I wanted to build my own speargun. My friends gun has been holding me over while I completed this one. It is 48" muzzle to butt and 40" from band slot to trigger mech. it is a deep open track with neptonics hardware. I made a few mistakes along the way but I am very pleased with how it turned out.:thumbsup2:
Sorry about the crappy cell phone pics.

    Hey all,
Been a lurker for awhile. Just recently got into spearfishing and gun building. I have been borrowing a friends speargun for the last several months and have been hunting the waters of Tampa Bay for Sheepshead and having a blast. I like to build stuff in my free time and have recently finished a teak 100 cm gun that I will put into use in Tampa Bay and the Gulf. Look forward to reading and posting many stories.
