Great video. Was cold watching.
What are those Spotted fish? Rockfish? Bet they are good eating.
Haha! I had to watch the video to see what you were talking about. They are kelp perch! Very common, averaging 3-5" I have never eaten one.

After work yesterday I went out and messed with some pink salmon. They are the easiest of the salmon to get and the most abundant, but still fun to shoot. To make it a little more fun I try to pick the brightest fish out of the school so that's why you'll see me wait so long to shoot.
Welcome! Its a friendly helpful group here. Good luck!
Welcome to Speardiver.
Fully submerged, what does that mean? That you can't throw a spear standing on a boat or a rock, or that you can't shoot floating on the surface?
It doesn't specify but what I've gathered from F&G is it's meaning to keep people from spearing air to water.
Just looked and the south-central regs are the only one to not list spearfishing in the state wide methods and means section, but it is listed on page 17
Welcom!
The regs are saltwater, you must be fully submerged and regular sport fishing limits and regs apply. You can find it in the methods and means section of the regs usually in the first 6-8pages
Welcome
Welcome!
Sweet! What paint are you using threw your airbrush? Dose it hold up on metal guns?
Welcome! Iv bow hunted down there and really liked it never crossed my mind to bring my dive gear.
My question about deep safe areas is what about HNL guys? How is deep water safe from them. If it's a species that doesn't take a hook then yes a safe area should help them, but there's no depth of water safe from hooks! I just don't see taking away from one user group to give to another if it doesn't really benefit the fish. I personally don't care how some one gets there fish as long as it's sustainable and done with respect.
I bought one of these a few months back and also bought the gopro mount that Dan sells for it as well. I forget that Im even wearing the gopro its that comfortable. I dont feel any pressure from the mask and Ive been down to 85' with it so far no issues. Even beach diving for 6 hours or more and the mask is still comfortable. Definitely worth the $$$ IMO.

I just got this mask last week (very nice!) and was curious about the security of the gopro mount. Have you notice the screw/mount loosen at all? I'm thinking of glueing it just in case
Display MoreIm after one nice fish when I go out. Sometimes I even come home empty handed after swimming for 4-6 hours. If someone's idea of hunting is poaching lobsters and shooting undersized fish and surfacing with a full stringer every 20 minutes I cannot and will not support them. The only fish that SHOULD be harvested in this manor are 'invasive species'. It's divers with these practices that make the rest of us who actually care about the reef look bad too. So I must differentiate myself apart. At the end of the day is this not a sport? Where's the sport in scuba spearfishing? If you don't believe what Im saying about them, youtube any scuba spearfishing video and just watch as they fill an entire stringer in one dive. If you want to blow bubbles and shoot fish it should be restricted to 100' or more if we're going to compromise here.
I'd be more than willing to bet that we would see a big change in the life/activity on our reefs within a few years if they implemented a strategy like this. For some reason the old saying "It's like shooting fish in a barrel.." comes to mind when I think of scuba spearfishing..

You bring up several points that I'm glad you did. First there will always be poachers scuba, freediving, rod and reel some people will always abuse a resource and you can't say it's only the guys on scuba doing it. Poaching comes down to enforcement and informing people of what there actions are doing. I have spearfished both ways and I have chosen my preferred way but I'm not going to tell some one they can't shoot fish on a tank because of a few who do it illegally.
How many years do you think you have to Freedive? Now throw in a life changing event like a heart attack, stroke, car wreck..... Will you stop enjoying the water and shooting a fish or two? Do you want that option gone if something like that dose happen? Not all people in power chairs are to fat and lazy to walk just as not all on scuba are fat beer drinkers. Don't try and take some thing from others just because of a few bad people.
I wouldn't get to bent up about the sport of it some times it's just about enjoying the water and bring home dinner while your down there.
I think your hart is in the right place your just taking it out on the wrong group.
This is a "united we stand divided we fall" discussion. Iv hand this discussion many times with fellow big game hunters. Just because you don't agree with some one else's idea of hunting doesn't mean you should condemn it. In fact you should passionately defend it! because who knows once that is gone it might just be your favored way to hunt that's on the chopping block next.
Welcome
^^Haha now that's redneck!!^^
Good luck to you. I just spent $67.10 on seven 2lb weights for my new weight belt setup. Neptonic wants $10.95 for 2lb pinch weights on there site. Weights will out last any of your other gear and you need them, so I wouldn't get to hung up on price.
Display MoreTree Billy could rig something with this part, $5 not bad for test.
Household Essentials Aluminum Clothesline Spreader - Pulleys - Amazon.com
There was a lot of clothes line pulleys in search.
Time for some water tests and different lines.
If Treebilly has access to down-rigger just use the SS cable in it. Have his boat hand operate it. Might be a cheap test, just cost him a six-pack or two.
I'll see what I can find in town for pulleys first but that dose look like it'll work.
I'm positive this will work on salmon if they are around to see the flashers but you are probably right about using a guy on the boat to test on bottom fish. I think my bottom fishing gear would be easier to use than my down riggers for this. Next time I fish shallow for halibut( I do most in 100-200 fathoms....yes I'm odd here) and we get in to them I will see if we can get some to follow it up and what it takes to get them to do so.
I use a flasher and rattle on the end of a marker buoy line for lingcod and it works great. While I'm relaxing on the surface I jig the flasher on the bottom to bring the lings in and out of hiding. So I believe this idea will work better on them than halibut.
Did want at least 12 to 18 inches for my preference. Maybe double up the crab floats
Just preference really
Ya 4' might be a bit much. I'll try threw just the float first ( guessing 10-14") and see how that dose. I'll start with salmon and about 100' of line to see if this is worth doing. Salmon are more eager to chase flashers and not as picky about speed.
Maybe I can try it in the next few days. I'll let you know what I think.
