I started with a JBL carbine back in '88 and "graduated" to a JBL 38 Special NW when I got out of college. I still have both of them and used to think they were the cats meow. They are retired now.

With the little one band carbine I actually bounced the spear off of rockfish and Cabezons at close range. Zero penetration.

I am glad I have nicer gear now!

A 40 would seem about right as an equivalent. You would probably be laughing to yourself the whole time you were assembling the gun because it would be so small. :)

Now that the vis is here I will break out the Speardiver 90 as this spot does not have much kelp.

Thanks guys. I try not to shoot unless I can hit the head. Hate filleting and seeing the big hole.

The 90 is great. My problem is most of the dives I do during the season the vis is just not good enough to wield a big gun. I do use it out on the coast now and I do like how much reach I have. Very fast and nice gun. It has been my first railgun as they are rare up here.

The little Riffe is a Competitor OO. It is 27" long. It is nice to swim around with but a little under gunned for a big Lingcod. I normally use a Riffe Os or Speardiver 90 for bigger fish.

Yesterday the vis opened up quite a bit and was closer to 20 for the first hour until the tide change. Got a mixed bag yesterday.

Our season just started up here. Just checking in as well to see how you east coast guys were doing.

I am sorry for your loss guys and for Nates family.

RIP Nate, wish I could have met you.

Be safe guys. We are all important to each other and our families and friends. Much more important then a fish. Damn...

    Hey Seabee,

You have great places to dive up there. Our winter viz has been amazing this year. I am sure your viz is much better then down here in the sound. Good luck with learning to freedive. I barely put on my scuba gear anymore.

The closures are from mismanagement. Here in Washington we have to co-manage with three groups that all think they deserve the fish. Our Native Americans take half no matter what, the other half is split between commercials and sporties. Unfortunately the sporties are not very well organized so we lose out almost always to commercial interests.

The tribes don't talk to fish and game and so the resource gets managed very badly. End result is short seasons and very little sport harvest in the Puget Sound and not much better out on the Pacific.

    It is all very sad.

Well we have next to nothing open for spearing right now. So if you want to harvest then Dungeness Crab are about the only option. We had a fun day last Sunday diving for crab. Was able to limit in the cold water. It has dropped to 46 now which makes for some cold toes! Anyways the crab makes it worth the effort.

I was in Cairns last summer. What a great place. Next time I am down there I am definitely going to try and spear a fish or two. Your live in a beautiful place!

You have some great diving down there! I just got back from diving the Channel Islands for lobster. We did well freediving at night and it was a blast. I was surprised at how many abalone you have and there size. They look like dinner plates! Would love to have harvested one.

Unfortunately we do not have a lot of variety of fish to shoot. Regulations are pretty rigid here. The Lings can be grey, reddish brown, or greenish blue all living around each other. I was told the greenish blue ones are crab eaters. Who knows...

The cool part about the green-blue ones is that the meat is the same color! It cooks out to white immediately although my mother in law still won't eat the green ones.

These are ambush predators so not to difficult to shoot when you find them.

So I have been meaning to contribute for awhile. First post will just be some pictures of what we shoot up here in the Pacific Northwest. Lingcod and rockfish are the main species on our list.

Sorry for the loss. My buddy lost his new rail gun while dealing with a big Lingcod on Friday. Shaft ripped out and he held on to the Ling while the gun sank away. Took us 20 minutes and a bunch of dives but we did find the gun.

Hopefully someone will find the gun and put it in a classified announcement or ??
