    Hey family,

I figured it was about time to actually post some stuff. This report is from 6/9/14

Last Monday I had my mind set on diving. After all the setup and grabbing my brother from deerfield, the kayak hit the water at about 12:30. the current was strong, but the waves were negligable. 0-1 ft avg. We paddled out to the second reef where an angler was attached to one of the mooring buoys. What I didn't know at the time was the reef/ledge is right below the buoys, and after speaking with the angler he directed us back in, saying the reef was inside the buoys. :nono: This turned out to not be the case haha. I now know for future reference. Needless to say, we ended up back around the first reef sections and began diving. The vis was pretty good, at about 30-40. I kept seeing smaller spanish hogs so I was pretty certain a big guy was around. After quite a bit of stalking I followed this spanish hog back to an overhanging ledge where the last thing I see on my way back up to the surface is a glance at a large tail. I didn't know what it was, only by the size of the tail could I tell it looked pretty darn big.

I rest at the surface for a couple minutes, my eyes honed in on this ledge. I take my last couple breaths and head down the 25-30' to the bottom. Pretty much as soon as i get within about 5 feet of the ledge the image of this fish starts appearing and it is what I consider a flipping large hog, probably the second largest I've ever actually seen. Pole spear already nocked and ready to go I align and place a decent shot.

The rest of the day was good diving, but not very eventful. I saw a nice size triggerfish and missed :( I also found a nice coral head with 4 nice size bugs under it :(

I know the seond pic is blurry, but he came out to 20.5" at the fork.

So two weeks ago my roommate and I decided to get some gear. For quite some time I've been doing some research on different items, both those offered by Speardiver and others. We both ended up getting a speardiver wetsuit. Dan was kind enough to let us try them on to secure a good fit. My stats are 5'11, 165lbs and a medium long fit perfectly. It was extremely comfortable at the shop and I was excited to see how it would perform in the water. We went out to the jax later that day.

I geared up and went to put my socks on in the water (they were a little sandy) . I remember plopping down just to get wet and make it easier. There I was sitting in the water but to my astonishment I was completely dry?! Such a foreign feeling. Every wetsuit I have put on has been wet. I didn't wear the hood and still stayed completely dry. So dry in fact, after about an hour and a half of diving I had to take off my gloves and let water in I was so hot. Even after 4 hours of diving I had only felt a single trickle of water on my lower back. Truly amazing.

Hey guys, trying to have a decent setup for kayak diving. Right now my roommate and I have a single 12' and a tandem 13' ocean kayak. We have our life preservers and whistles stowed away (as is required legally) , and course our basic dive gear. At first we'll be primarily using slings and pole Spears in 30-40' of water. Do you guys have any suggestions or a list of other things to bring out with us? Just off the top of my head I thought of a first aid kit. Any help would be very much appreciated. :)

I'm not a terribly good diver. But I have been doing a lot of research. One of the videos I came across was this one. At about 2:40 in the video he starts to explain his viewpoints and opinions on contractions. He seems to think they are actually a good thing? at around 4:00 he gives his own experience with some positive results. I suggest watching the whole thing. What do you guys think?

I love seeing pics like this! after seeing what that cam can do I'm very impressed. Went out today with some good friends and the vis was insane. Easily the best I've seen all year. The water had this nice southern windswell. Blue as good be..., saw some large parrotfish, a few nurse sharks and got to play airplane with a small sea turtle. but, I left the gopro w/ filter at shore. Doh! oh well. sometimes things are just meant to be experienced. :)

Thanks for the quick response ReefChief. I typically dive Tuesday and/or Wednesday although I usually have one other weekday off. I frequently scuba Sunday mornings right off the beach with a group of guys but I'd gladly skip a few to see how it's done. Tagging along on a beach dive would be an awesome experience i'd be grateful to take part in. Thanks for all your help.

    Hey family,

My name is Jim. I've been doing quite a bit of research lately into freediving and spearing. I am also PADI Open Water certified and continuing my education/experience in that facet as well. So far I have very little experience with freediving and spearing. Right now I go once to twice a week shallow water diving (15-25') for the past couple months but have yet to even hold a speargun/sling. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps someone I could just tag along with and shadow would be awesome as well. I live right near Ft. Lauderdale beach but would be willing to travel. Again, any help is appreciated. :thumbsup2:

    Thanks,

    Jim
