In shallow water in particular, when you get a significantly longer period of bottom time, I like to drop straight to the deck and then "aspetto" the reef, lying either completely still or slowly creeping across the structure with one hand while remaining as flush as possible with the bottom.

One of my favorite techniques for wary fish is to conceal behind a blind piece of structure after they've spotted you, like a rise or corner, and then toss a handful of sand or debris up above or next to you, into their line of sight. After doing this once or twice, lots of fish will actually come investigate what you're getting into. The ones that don't come closer at least tend to relax a little, thinking you're just going about your business, and will present a decent shot when you creep back into view.

Using a standard one-legged entry, I hold my long gun straight down and do a half breast stroke with my gun-free arm that gets me to 10-12ft with enough weight to be neutral at 30, for hunting beyond 40. Because I tend to make my descents more or less vertically, holding the gun extended feels exactly the same as a typical streamlined no-gun descent..

Some of the guys I dive with don't have the greatest surface entry technique, and struggle to get down the first 10ft without overweighting themselves, or doing a flailing breast stroke with their gun hand. Which obviously wastes a ton of oxygen. I try and advocate mastering an entry technique that works efficiently for them to get quickly into a streamlined gun-ahead position.

Greetings all! Name is Rob, have been ghosting this board for a couple of years but yet to participate. Primarily it's because I'm active on dozens of fishing, spearing, kayak, freedive and scuba related boards and it gets to be a chore keeping track of them all.

Born and raised in the Hawai'ian islands, relocated to Tallahassee in 2000 and have been working the Florida coast ever since. I'm an avid freediver, traditional diver, spearo, kayak angler, photographer and all around explorer and have been as comfortable in the water as out since about age 4. Scuba certified since the early 90s, and F.I.I. freedive certified as well.

I'm the owner and primary designer for Hypoxia Outfitters, a spearfishing inspired apparel brand, been doing it since 2009. When I'm not working on that I provide creative consulting to businesses looking to launch new products and services or rebrand their company.

Always down to fish, just give me a shout!
