    Oscar,
Thanks for the tips. I have my reel set up now on a RA 140 carbon. It fits my needs a little bit better and provides me a little more versatility than a float line for my style, I believe. I may end up going the float line route later down the road.

I am just in Belize for another few weeks, unfortunately.

Marco, no worries. It's through experience that we learn I suppose, and thanks for the advice. I would ditch my gun before that time came, but I'm sure others have been less fortunate while thinking the same.

No worries on "sounding like an ass" (you don't), I know your comments are only helpful.

This one was mine :). It was the biggest I shot that day.

On my first try at 80' I saw a pretty large grouper (Jake said 20+ lb) and shot it but my placement was poor, high on it's back. He was able to shake the spear out, which may have been fortunate because I don't have a reel yet. Might have lost my gun on that one or had to spend some time recovering it if he holed up.

Nothing compared to Jake's and Hank's, but I'm learning. Thanks again to Hank and the crew for allowing me to tag along and learn the ropes from the real experts! I had a blast and can't wait to get back in the water as soon as I can.

Interestingly the Unicorn filefish is one of only 3 species that are an exception in its category (filefish/triggerfish) and as such is not considered ornamental and is legal to spear. I've never eaten Unicorn filefish but I have taken filefish in another part of the world and they are good eats. The flesh is similar to Ocean triggerfish and there are no bones. The fillets are thin as you can imagine.

I've also taken Trunkfish and Hank is correct in that there's 3 strips of flesh that are good to eat. But they're really small relative to the rest of the fish and I'd feel bad discarding so much of it, so I would not take them again unless I was in serious need of food.

Chopa (Chub) are :yucky: but I suppose anything cooked right will be palatable.

Bagged a decent size filefish once... it was delicious. Super easy to prepare and about as good/better than trigger fish. I really like triggers.

Ate Bermuda Chub today (scoff if you want)... did it with beer battered fish and chips; my buddy actually preferred it over the trigger in a blind taste test.

The one I'll disagree with you all on is trunkfish... had it once and it didn't agree with me.

Brian, I'll be headed that way later this week most likely. If you could put me in touch with some spearos in the area, I'd be most appreciative. Thanks! (My PM still isn't working yet)

    Brian,
Which bar is yours? I make my way up there every once in awhile and have been spearing several times as well.

Thanks for reaching out guys. I think because I'm such a new member I cannot PM members right now... unless I'm doing something wrong. If you're able to PM me, I would appreciate it.

I'd be happy to take you out on my boat. I'll pm you my cell and email address.
And I do get to Hawaii every year to visit my daughter so .....:thumbsup2:

No need bring a gun. I have some Wongs here. 55 GR plus. Or a Riffe if you prefer.

Hank, I'm down here in Belize for some work for the next month or so. Would love to link up if you're around at all. I'm pretty new to the hobby/sport but at the very least have a lot of questions about the spearing here!

    Cheers.

Hello all! I am definitely a novice at best but have recently started to really get into spearfishing. I started off simple with a basic pole spear and paralyzer 3-prong barb but have since "graduated" up to a Rob Allen tuna 110cm. I have enjoyed it a lot but sometimes feels a little big so I also ordered a Rob Allen Snapper in 70cm... I plan to use it for around the reef and as a smaller hole gun.
