This is a great site for finding information. While checking back for replies check out the beginning spearfishing sections.
I'm also new to spearfishing and have found some great info here.

"I have been down there a few years ago. I can hook you up with locals there."

Linghunt, Thanks. I don't think I can PM yet but you've got my contact info. I actually got to SpearDiver by chasing down some posts by you and others about polespears.
Great Forum, I've been making all kinds of plans from the information given out here. I'll be making some water taxi trips to Chimo if I can't get a place to overnight there. Looks like a great little fishing town, I'm hoping the local flare can keep the better half busy while I do some diving.

Thanks guys, good advice and I'll see if I can find more on here through the above mentioned. When I was there in Jan I had decided not to take my gear because I couldn't find out much, but while on the beach one day, drinking margaritas, a local came by with a pole spear made from rebar and some medical tubing, I figured I might as well give it a try! I hadn't considered my gear on the beach so I guess I'll add a waterproof drag bag to attach to my buoy.
    Thanks,

I am traveling to Puerto Vallarta in about a month and I'm looking for info on pole spear fishing. I've been in contact with a few of the area charter companies but it is difficult to find out about spearfishing outside of chartering with one of these companies.
Anyone familiar with the area? I've read some Mexican fishing regulations but I can't find too many specifics. I've read about the license, the limits for "underwater" fishing as well as the law that says no spearfishing with tanks. I've found this one line:

"It is prohibited to practice sportfishing 250 meters or less from swimmers."

other than that I haven't found out much about off limit areas and 'good places to go'.
I won't mind getting a panga a few times to take me out but I'd also like to see if there are any areas I could explore on my own, at my own pace. Any new information would be great to hear about. Also, any divers? It would be great to go spearfishing one day or just get a beer and talk about fishing just message me. My wife and I plan to stay a few weeks so I plan on taking advantage of the time.
    Thanks!

    Hey all,
I'm a new member to Speardiver and a new member to spearfishing. I've always enjoyed snorkeling, scuba, fishing and the ocean in general. Recently while working in Hawaii for a few weeks, a student suggested spearfishing over the weekend and I've been hooked ever since.
I'm retired military, still contracting with the military and this takes me around the world so what a great new hobby!
I'm still working on pole spear fishing and loving it. I've been researching everything I can find out about spearfishing in Puerto Vallarta, I'm heading there in just over a month. This research lead me to Speardiver, specifically some recommended spearfishing safety videos and info on float lines. I would love to know anything you folks have about the pole spear fishing in PV, I've already been in contact with a charter company there to do some basic reef spearfishing as a type of intro, I've been to Puerto Vallarta a few times but never spearfishing there. It should be a great time!
