I've seen a few videos from Europe of people using the multiprongs, including some fairly large fish getting stoned. At close range on bigger fish it may give a higher chance of a stone shot? I've seen some Norcal guys using them too, which would seem to compute with that hypothesis.

RMSA is a good organization. I attended one of their tournaments last year and had a great time. Good competition, lots of friendly people, great food, and lots of prizes for everybody.

Any thoughts on a freshwater section here on FDSF?

    Harold-

I still have that fish on ice, when I get home from work I'll take another photo of it. It's over 14", thankfully. Interesting you mention it, because it was a lot smarter than the other rockfish. Not that that's saying much, though.

So I attempted to avoid the crowds this weekend, and did a dive near the Ventura county line. No luck on the seabass (though I've seen them there before), and the viz was patchy at 5-6 feet. Water temp had dropped to 55-57. I did manage to score a limit (10) of kelp rockfish, including two very nice ones over 13". Seabass may be the ultimate prize, but these guys are actually tastier in my opinion...

I love that the line release is on the left side. Don't see that very often and wish it was an option on all guns.

Just out curiosity, why is this desirable? Is it more suitable for left handers? A lot of european guns seem to do it exclusively.

I ask for a comparison on the two because I'm considering switching to a vest system, and these are the two that are most starkly different, at least as far as I can tell. The shoulder straps: Beuchats are wider, and fit more on the chest, so maybe the support is more spread out and less on the shoulders. The ball system for fitting under the weight belt: Beuchat has two balls on the sides (optional 3rd in the back), as opposed to one on the back.

Some stuff that might only come from first hand experence: maybe the vest is another place for air bubbles to become trapped and spook WSB at inappropriate moments?

    Thanks

I like the tracks, they look nice and deep, unlike a lot of custom guns from Europe with the very shallow tracks. Good for easy and rapid reloading.

I agree that the metal muzzle looks nicer than the Abellansub. It looks like there is no shaft on metal contact, which would be quieter. How many bands can the muzzle accomodate?

When I got scuba certified, I started out with a pair of ScubaPro Twin Jets. Then I pretty much immediately went back to freediving (due to costs and the local diving I had at the time, which was inland on the east coast). I switched to a pair of force fins, and then to the longer force fins. As goofy as they are, they were perfect for what I was doing at the time, which was swimming/snorkeling in shallow, high speed rapids in a river, chasing large gar and huge catfish. They were short, wouldn't get bashed or break on rocks, and I could walk in them when necessary.

When I moved to California, I got the least expensive long fins I could find, which were the JBL/Esclapez thermoplastic blades. They did fine for a while. Then at the beginning of a fateful shore dive, they both cracked right below the toe. Despite the dramatic failure of a piece of primary equipment, I didn't abort, and freeswam a couple miles, and caught a halibut on top of it.

Foolishly, I replaced the JBL's with another pair of JBL's. Those broke after exactly 2 dives, and I swore never to buy them again. I got the Riffe Silent Hunters, which were great. Then, for shits and giggles (and because of a great price), I got some Specialfins blue water specials, which I have been using for the past 2 years with no problems. I gave the Riffes to a friend who still uses them.

    I just got back yesterday.

Unfortunately, things turned into a bit more of a family-oriented trip due to both my parents' ill health at the time, combined with some wind and poor diving conditions. Nonetheless, I was able to get in two solid dives.

Impressions in brief, from the perspective of a west coaster: WOW, the water is warm in that part of the world. The idea of salt water over 80 degrees was totally foreign to me before now. It felt amazing. Secondly, even though the viz was "bad" at 10-15 feet, now I actually can understand how that would be considered bad, since in CA we're actually spoiled in the sense that we can locate divable reef structure very easily from the surface (either shore or boat) based on the kelp beds, and the flow of geography/geology on land and into the water. By contrast, any good rocky reef that I was able to locate in Puerto Rico from shore was a lot more at random, so I can see how 30-100 foot of viz would be a big advantage - or even a necessity - to hunting. Lastly, everyone I ran into in Puerto Rico was extremely friendly and hospitable :)

I was able to shoot two fish -one of which was a lionfish. Those things were everywhere :( The other was a small parrotfish that made excellent ceviche.

Short video of footage I was able to get:

My first build was slightly less than 1.25" tall, with horizontal hickory lams. It bent a little under 2 5/8" bands, and the effect on accuracy was noticeable. That gun is now retired, unfortunately, but it was a good learning experience. With vertical lams and different wood your results could be better, though.

Besides bending, also consider the potential recoil of a 7mm shaft, and the need for enough gun mass to counter it.

Good luck, and post pictures of the gun build, as well as the fish you wind up getting with it!

Are you planning on tucking the sliptip cord into the bands? I've noticed that band elevators/separators make doing so rather difficult, resulting in the tip coming off when it's least convenient.

Looks very nice. Looks like you filled the trigger pocket with epoxy before cutting it out again? Was that an intentional part of the construction to make cutting the track and pocket easy on the same fence setting?
