South Laguna was diveable. . . I wasn't feeling the swim out to the farther reefs, and the boiler rocks weren't holding, so I got out and moved North.

    Visibility: 10-15'
Swell: Not over 2', but a lot of water was moving underneath.
Surprisingly little life out there, probably because the water is COLD.

Central Laguna was super easy diving, and I kicked to the outer reefs, but the super green, cold water on the bottom wasn't giving me much of a break as hunting goes. Saw a few decent fish, but not as many as usual.

    Visibility: 8-10'
Swell: 1', not as surgy as South Laguna
I thought it was interesting to hit two thermoclines before 40', with anything below 30' holding super thick, green, cold water.

Northern Laguna was pretty typical. . . for early Spring or late Fall.

    Visibility: 15-20'
Swell: 2', Some surge, but not as bad as South Laguna.
Warmer water here, and more life, but same green haze on the bottom.

nice report...what is it like being in the water w the squid boats?..do they bring a lot of life around them or not really...shrimp trawlers around here are like food buffets for big oredators and I was wondering if it is the same at all

I didn't get closer than about 100 yards, for courtesy to all the kayak fisherman around the squid boats like flies on roadkill. Everything was pretty quiet even with the boats around.

Dove La Jolla kelp in front of Children's Pool today by 'yak. Had to tell the seal watchers that they were kooks, and to get a day job, but we got to launch despite the seals and their creepy human lovers :poke:

Squid boats were fishing, and so was a zoo of other boats, but the fish were relatively. . . . absent. Warm water on top, cool water below. Lots of big black seabass around following me like puppy dogs when I had a speared fish. Lots of bait around, but it was all just milling about.

Took a couple decent reef fish, and I heard that a donkey yt got nabbed at the outer bed to the South.

Vis. was maybe 20-35'. . . . go get 'em.

    Visibility ranged from 5-20'.
    Barely any current anywhere.

I slipped quietly through about 5 super dense kelp beds, but none held even the faintest sign of ghosts.
Visibility turned too hazy and milk blue to bother hunting for yellowtail on the outskirts of the kelp, but I did manage to find some decent calicos and a sheephead.

I hear some faint whispers about fish at other locations on the island, but everything immediately West of Avalon was pretty dead and had bad vis.

Oh yeah; I almost forgot. I got my SCUBA certification when I was 12, and then did that for 2 years before I got adopted into freediving and spearfishing. I still SCUBA occassionally when I'm hunting bottom fish in deep, cold water, or when there's a ton of current, but I prefer freediving whenever it's practical. So all together I've been spearfishing for about 4 years.

    Hey guys,

I'm new here from Spearboard. Someone told me that it's basically the same except for a lot less drama and BS.

Anyway, I'm 18 and I dive Laguna mostly, and Catalina (since my sister can get me and one other person $4RT tickets to Avalon) but whenever I have the gas money, I like to hit PV. I'm a tentative Fathomier. I shoot a 110cm Rabitech Apex, and yes I know it's a bit short for pelagics, but it's my go-to gun.

I haven't yet racked up the skill to shoot a white seabass or yellowtail, but I look forward to hopefully accomplishing both feats this Summer if sure shots present themselves.

    Cheers,
    Patrick
