I am pretty sure most of the guys down here use a trap bouy and cheap line. I have a 130 railgun a 75' float line 10ft bungie and a RA 11L Hard Float. I am quite sure that setup should land one without much trouble although I do know for a fact that a slip tip is a good investment.

I was dreaming of black grouper last night. I will probably head out sunday to some 40ft stuff off kw that holds grouper.

Barracudas are easily taken without float or reel. Shoot them in the top half of their body preferably the head and pull them to you. Then straddle and brain them.

I was wondering the same thing at some point, so here's what I understood from reading descriptions. Keep in mind this is all relative to our diving conditions, to someone coming from worse conditions it would not seem that way. I hope the California guys don't misinterpret my post, I have all the more respect for them for diving in these conditions.
Cold water. You'll need a 5mm and 7mm suits to extend your diving season. This translates into diving with more weight.
Limited diving season. Can't dive year round because of the cold. I'm not sure which months out of the year you can't dive.
Bad vis. 20ft vis is a good day.
Much smaller variety of game fish.
Possibility of white shark encounter.
Possibility of sea lion encounter.
You sometimes have to deal with enviro freaks, who can can push you to the point where you'll end up in jail.
Large areas have been closed to spearfishing due to MLPA.
To dive in conditions that you're used to diving in your back yard you'll have to travel to Mexico.Vis and sharks are not a problem. I will invite the environazis to dive with me. I wont be able to dive in a 7mm in winter? ughhh that one kills me!

I didn't shoot, but my buddy paul shot a nice 20lb+ king that was eaten in around two bites....the king looks tiny but the camera is a little weird. If you have ever seen big bulls they have a huge hump in their back like the ones in the vid, so they were NOT small

I was very upset with the MAKO brainwashing campaign.

Life is a tragedy for those who feel and a comedy for those who think

I have a YETI 120QT....its badass I think it held some tuna steaks in a black truckbed for 5 days before they got rid of them all.

Nice fish Matt, boy that water looks beautiful .
Cheers, Don
You couldnt see 5ft in front of you it was sooo murkey up top and 15ft of vis MAX looking below

I agree. Nailed a nice goatfish and felt good about myself. If I shot that I ne feeling great:D
The hardest thing about shots from above is that the fish can juke in a lot more directions as opposed to just left or right.
Beautiful fish
I shot him down behind his fin and out the bottom....I am actually holding his guts in with my hand lol.

Well done Matt. Shots from the top are difficult.
Thanks Dan I appreciate it. -
I can put three on it if I need to. I needed a gun with a reel that wouldnt turn into a huge cluster~`~`~`~` of line when I was diving in rough water. So I went with reel+ enclosed track, but I also needed it to be thin like my railguns or I would never use it. THAT is why I paid the money, because it fit my needs perfectly. Yes I can kill fish with 1 band or 3 bands but that was my last priority. Three bands and a 62" shaft with a sliptip would most likely dominate wahoo, blackfin tuna, or a fat black. It worked just fine today
I shot him from above while swimming at the surface in about 25ft so it was about an 8-10ft shot from the tip of the gun.

Matt did say he broke a band. I guess Hatch invests more into the other parts of the gun.
He made the bands in a hurry to ship it out since I ordered it late in the day. I could care less about bands/shafts as long as the design works for me. I am not as sophisticated as you guys and I only require one band to kill fish

I will take some pics later....the gun looks like it was made for captain america.

It was windy so I just terrorized the fish in the canal. I broke a band loading it and I think I will be putting a short shaft into it but other then that shes perfect. Shoots soooooooooooooooooooooo smooth!!

Well the gun is definitely worth the money. It is a wood gun ballasted for 3x5/8 bands yet it handled like my railgun. That is all I wanted in a gun...no bells and whistles just a simple effective design. I just have to master the art of the speargun reel and I will be set...lol.
